The softball state tournament begins on Monday. Below are Mike Pucci's predictions for the semifinals and championship games in the four classes.

Class LL
Final four: No. 1 Masuk, No. 5 Southington, No. 10 Newtown and No. 3 Mercy.
Champion: Masuk over Mercy.

Class L
Final four: No. 1 Naugatuck, No. 4 Lyman Hall, No. 7 Rockville and No. 3 Hand.
Champion: Hand over Naugatuck.

Class M
Final four: No. 1 Seymour, No. 4 Lauralton Hall, No. 2 St. Joseph and No. 6 Woodland.
Champion: Seymour over St. Joseph.

Class S
Final four: No. 8 St. Bernard, No. 4 Coginchaug, No. 15 Trinity Catholic, No. 14 Old Lyme.
Champion: In an all-Shoreline Conference final, Coginchaug defeats Old Lyme.

Law beat city rival Foran 11-6 today at Yale Field to win its first Southern Connecticut Conference title.
Seeded No. 2, the Lawmen were led by Brett Michael Doran. The junior, who hit a hard bouncer that drove in the game-deciding run in a 4-3 win over Amity in the semifinals, homered twice Saturday. No. 4 Foran held a 4-2 win entering the third inning, but Law scored nine over the next to frames. It was the third time Law beat Foran this season.

Nominations are now being accepted for members of the Connecticut wrestling community for induction into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. The Connecticut Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame will hold an induction dinner next spring to honor outstanding athletes, coaches and contributors to the sport of wrestling from Connecticut.

The men and women who will be honored will include those who have demonstrated a lifetime service to the sport (coaches, officials, contributors), former wrestlers who have distinguished themselves in the community and their chosen profession and individuals who have exhibited courage in the face of adversity. Connecticut has 23 inductees in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Nominations for the 2010 induction banquet must be received by June 30. Any applications received after that date will be considered for future induction events. For the second straight day, the South-West Conference softball championship game between Masuk and Lauralton Hall has been postponed due to wet field conditions.

Because DeLuca Field in Stratford takes so long to dry out, the game has been postponed to Sunday night at 7 - the day before the state tournament begins.

Here's a quick overview for this year's state tournament baseball pairings...

CLASS LL
Bristol Central has the top seed and could meet up with pitcher David Speer and No. 8 Staples. Shelton gets the No. 9 seed and could face the Wreckers in the second round, if the Gaels get by No. 24 Norwalk. After dropping its last four, West Haven falls to the No. 4 seed. They could meet up with No. 5 Cheshire, the team that knocked it out of the SCC tournament, in the quarterfinals. Defending champion Westhill earns the No. 12 seed. SWC powerhouse Pomperaug gets the No. 2. Fairfield Prep is the No. 30 seed and Amity could be dangerous at the No. 14 spot. Xavier and Masuk square off Saturday in a play-in game and the winner gets Bristol Central.
CLASS L
Behind Gatorade State Player of the Year Matt Carasiti, Berlin is the No. 1 in this field. It struggled down the stretch, but Avon picks up the No.2. No. 16 North Haven and No. 17 Bunnell will face each other in what should be an intriguing first-round game. Sheehan can be a sleeper at No. 13 as could be Hand at No. 29. The Tigers did make a lengthy run in last year's state tournament. No. 26 Platt Tech will have its hands full with Darien's Duke-bound ace Devin Burke. SCC foes No. 3 Law and No. 30 East Haven meet in the opening round and the winner may get No. 14 Branford.
CLASS M
Seymour is the top seed here. It's reward? A really tough draw. Assuming it beats Barlow in the first round, the Wildcats could face either Woodland, which is the only team to be them this season, or St. Joseph, which has three Division I players. After that, they may play a tough Holy Cross or East Catholic team. This is all before the semifinals. Northwestern gets the No. 2 seed. A hot Foran team draws the No. 7 seed, but could face No. 10 Wolcott, which, like Foran, has two Division I pitchers in Steve Catalina and Spencer Kane. Other area teams in Class M are No. 27 Ansonia and No. 11 Haddam-Killingworth.
CLASS S
Lastly, Thomaston earns the top seed in Class S, while Shepaug Valley picks up the No. 2 seed. Morgan and Coginchaug will meet Saturday for the Shoreline Conference championship and could meet in the quarterfinals as the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds respectively. Coginchaug will have to get by what has been an inconsistent No. 12 Career team this season. Cromwell will be the No. 3 seed and Old Lyme draw the No. 11seed.

The softball tournament pairings were just released, and there should be plenty of intriguing matchups in the four classes.

Below is an overview of what may happen on the road to the finals on June 12-13.

Class LL
Defending champion: Masuk
Overview: Masuk, the two-time defending champion, is the No. 1 seed, and received a first-round bye. The Panthers will play the winner of No. 16 Pomperaug vs. No. 17 Amity, from the SCC.

No. 8 Cheshire, also from the SCC, is also in the upper half of the bracket, and could face Masuk in the quarterfinals.

In the lower half, the area is well-represented. No. 31 Shelton plays at No. 2 Fitch; No. 15 Bunnell hosts No. 18 Fairfield Ludlowe; No. 3 Mercy entertains No. 30 Danbury; and No. 19 West Haven visits No. 14 Manchester.

Outlook: This is Masuk's title to lose. If the Panthers defeat Lauralton Hall in the SWC tournament final this weekend, Masuk will up its winning streak to 74 games. Masuk can play a maximum of four games in the Class LL tournament. If the Panthers will the title, they will tie Seymour's state record for consecutive wins (78). However, Cheshire, No. 4 Simsbury, No. Fitch, Mercy, No. 7 Trumbull and No. 10 Newtown all have the talent to compete with the Panthers. This class is loaded, as usual.

Class L
Defending champion: North Haven
Overview: No. 1 Naugatuck, which went to the Class LL final last season, has a bye into the second round. The Greyhounds could potentially face No. 17 Law, from the SCC, if the Eagles can get past No. 16 Wilton.

No. 4 Lyman Hall, fresh off the SCC title, is a threat to win it all. No. 12 Sheehan is also in the top half of the bracket.

No. 10 North Haven, No. 3 Hand, No. 19 Foran, No. 27 East Haven and No. 22 Guilford are all in the bottom half of the draw.

Outlook: Naugatuck, Lyman Hall, Hand and No. 6 Bristol Eastern can potentially emerge into the semifinals, but any number of teams can win this class, including No. 8 Maloney.

Class M
Defending champion: Lauralton Hall
Overview: No. 1 Seymour and No. 4 Lauralton Hall are both in the upper half, and should meet in the semifinals. No. 8 Griswold and No. 13 Stonington, which is playing for the ECC title, are also threats in the top half.

No. 2 St. Joseph, No. 10 Lyman Memorial, which went to the Class S final last season, No. 3 Rocky Hill, No. 14 Suffield and No. 6 Woodland are in the bottom half.

Outlook: Lauralton Hall and Seymour would be many fans' ultimate semifinal. St. Joe's looks like the team to beat in the bottom half.

Class S
Defending champion: Coginchaug
Overview: Windham Tech is the top seed and received a bye, as did No. 4 Coginchaug, No. 2 Terryville and No. 3 Cheney Tech.

No. 7 Platt Tech, No. 14 Old Lyme, No. 19 Hale-Ray, No. 27 Old Saybrook and No. 11 Derby are all in the bottom half of the bracket, which is arguably the toughest path to the final in this class.

Outlook: Coginchaug has a favorable draw, and could be playing in another final. A handful of teams could emerge from the bottom half.

Everything area tournament game was played Thursday ... except for the South-West Conference softball final. The game was postponed mere hours before the 7 p.m. start time between defending champion Masuk and Lauralton Hall at DeLuca Field in Stratford.

The makeup date is Friday at 7 p.m., but rain is in the forecast. Chances are, the game will be played some time on Saturday.

Junior first baseman Sarina Lyon's bloop single scored pinch runner Justina George with the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift fifth-seeded Lyman Hall to a 2-1 victory over No. 7 Amity in the championship of the Southern Connecticut Conference tournament.

It was the Trojans' (18-5) first outright SCC title. The team shared the title with Amity in 2003.

Sophomore pitcher Lauren Zambrano allowed just two hits and struck out 15 for Lyman Hall, and she was named the tournament's most outstanding player.

Kate Hoffman had a run-scoring single in the sixth inning that tied the game for the Spartans (14-9).

Amity may not have a hit, but the No. 3 Spartans do have a 2-1 advantage over No. 2 Law after four innings in the Southern Connecticut Conference tournament semifinal at Yale Field.
Five Law errors have led to the lead for the Spartans, who are hoping to clinch a seventh straight championship game appearance. The winner of Law and Amity will face Foran, which edged Cheshire 5-4 in the first semifinal game.

Fourth-seeded Foran knocked off No. 8 Cheshire 5-4 to advance to its first Southern Connecticut Conference baseball championship game.
Zack Phelan went 3-for-3 with two runs to lead Foran, which will play Saturday at Yale Field at noon against the winner of the Law-Amity game scheduled to begin in 35 minutes.
Foran pitcher Joe Michaud struggled for the first three innings, but settled down and retired 12 straight batters to earn the win. Brad Runowicz went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run for Cheshire.

Surprisingly, it hasn't been Foran pitcher Joe Michaud or the Lions' defense that has Foran in front of Cheshire 5-4 after four innings in the Southern Connecticut Conference semifinals at Yale Field. It's been all offense for Foran.
Zack Phelan has two hits and two runs to lead the Lions, seeded fourth. The offense for the No. 8 Rams have been all over Michaud and the Lions have committed three errors. The two teams have exchanged leads three times. Brad Runowicz has been the top hitter for Cheshire with two hits, an RBI and a run.

Berlin senior Matt Carasiti was named Gatorade Connecticut Baseball Player of the Year today.
The right-handed pitcher has a 7-1 record, while posting a 1.08 ERA with 84 strikeouts. He is the ace for the Redcoats, which are 17-3 entering the Class M state tournament. Carasiti is also batting .448 with three home runs and 17 RBIs.
The 6-foot-3, 205-pound Carasiti signed a national letter of intent to play at St. John's, but is expected to be selected in next month's MLB Draft.

Top-seeded Seymour ended No. 6 Crosby's Naugatuck Valley League tournament run today with a 4-2 win over the Bulldogs at in the championship game at Municipal Stadium.
It's the Wildcats second straight NVL tournament title.
After Crosby scored a pair of first-inning runs, Seymour starter Garrett Cornwell allowed just one hit over the final six innings. He allowed just three hits and didn't walk a batter. Chris Renzoni, who went 2-for-3 with a double and a run, was named NVL regular season and tournament MVP.

Amity defeated Cheshire 3-1 in 10 innings to advance to the SCC tournament final.

Senior catcher Erin Beaulieu hit a two-run single in the 10th for the No. 7 Spartans (14-8).

Cheshire (16-6) scored on an inning in the bottom of the 10th.

Amity will face No. 5 Lyman Hall. The Trojans knocked off top-seeded Hand 1-0.

Nicole Petersen had a run-scoring single in the fifth inning for Lyman Hall (17-5). Hand falls to 17-5.

The championship is on Thursday at 7 p.m. at West Haven.

It took a long time for Tevin Baskin to finally make a decision on where he will continue his baskeball career, but on Wednesday, the senior from Trinity Catholic finally did make one.
And Tom Moore and Quinnipiac University are the fortunate recipients.
Baskin made an oral commitment to Quinnipiac at the high school. Baskin, a three-time Register All-State selection, said he did not make his decision until late Tuesday night.
"I'm very happy to get things back to normal," Baskin said. Moore cannot officially comment on recruits until they sign a National Letter of Intent.
At one time, there were a number of Division I schools in the picture. Even earlier this week, Baskin said the programs at Temple, Siena and Maryland-Baltimore County all made contact within the last few days.
But Baskin said his final four choices came down to Quinnipiac, Manhattan, New Orleans and Binghamton. Baskin said he visited Quinnipiac last week.
"There are a lot of guys who go to big-time schools who end up unhappy," Baskin said. "I had to do what was best for me."
The period to sign a letter of intent ended last week. According to a source, Baskin still needs to take either the SAT or ACT once more to try and qualify academically. Baskin will graduate from Trinity on June 7.
If he gets the proper scores to go along with his grade point average, Baskin will be eligible to be put on scholarship, the source said. Otherwise, he would have to attend either prep school or a junior college.

Connor David scored on an error in the 11th inning to lift No. 8 Cheshire over top-seeded West Haven in the opening round of the Southern Connecticut Conference baseball tournament at Quigley Stadium.
Kevin Jefferis threw 10 innings, while striking out 12 for the Rams. Max Slade earned the win after pitching the 11th frame. Tommy Lawrence went 10 innings for West Haven, struck out 16, but picked up a no decision. Matt Langello took the loss for the Westies.
Lawrence gave West Haven a 4-2 lead in the fifth with a two-run home run, but Steve Howard responded with his own home run to spark a Cheshire comeback. Cheshire moves on to face No. 4 Foran Thursday at Yale Field. As for West Haven, it enters the state tournament next week with a four-game losing streak.

Laura Santry’s single drove in Kate Sartory to lift top-seeded Hand to a 3-2, 10-inning win over No. 8 North Haven in the SCC Tournament Quarterfinals.

Maggie Maguire and Katelyn Wall each had two hits for Hand (17-4).

North Haven (12-9) scored both runs on errors.

No. 2 Mercy lost to No. 7 Amity 1-0.

Cheshire 8, Derby 0: Linda Amarante struck out 12 and went 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the No. 3 Rams over the No. 6 Red Raiders.

Lindsay Pandajis added two hits, including a triple, and two runs for Cheshire (16-5).
Christine Gelardi tripled for Derby (14-7).

Lyman Hall 1, Sheehan 0: Lauren Zambrano’s sacrifice fly scored Nicole Rosa to lift the No. 5 Trojans over the No. 4 Titans.

Zambrano also struck out 14, while Steph Jensen added two hits for the Trojans (16-5).
Sheehan fall to 12-9.

In the NVL, Seymour beat Watertown 15-0 and Woodland knocked off Naugatuck 6-1. The championship is Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Wolcott.

This is Jeremy Moore's first year competing, but the Hillhouse senior has done well for himself.
Moore won the long jump, the triple jump and the high jump at the SCC field events Tuesday at Amity High. Moore is now setting his sights on Monday's Class MM state championship meet.

Also winning on Monday were Amity's Cole Crotta in the pole valult, defending his title, as did Fairfield Prep's Brad Kontra in the shot put. Kontra also won the discus and Sheehan's Kevin Gilhuly won the javelin.

This is the first time the SCC chose to split up the field events from the rest of the meet. The track events for both boys and girls are Wednesday at Sheehan, weather permitting.

TUESDAY
QUARTERFINALS

No. 2 Law vs. No. 7 Shelton at Quigley Stadium, 4 p.m.: The Gaels are one of the few teams that have been able to score runs against the Lawmen. But Law can score too. Law's pitching and defense, which hasn't allowed more than three runs in their last seven games, is the difference in this one.
Pick: Law

No. 1 West Haven vs. No. 8 Cheshire at Quigley Stadium, 7 p.m.: The Rams have been crushing the ball. The Westies dropped their last three. Is an upset in the works? No. West Haven has something to prove again and way too much talent not to break this slump.
Pick: West Haven

No. 3 Amity vs. No. 6 Notre Dame-West Haven at West Haven, 4 p.m.: A rematch of last year's conference championship, which the Green Knights won. Amity is without their ace Joe Ciancola and though Notre Dame struggled late in the season, a strong offense leads them to a win in this one.
Pick: Notre Dame-West Haven

No. 4 Foran vs. No. 5 Branford at West Haven, 7 p.m.: Winners of eight straight, the Lions are perhaps the hottest team in the state. To help matters, they open the tournament with the weakest team in the field.

SEMIFINALS
THURSDAY AT YALE FIELD (4 and 7 p.m.)

No. 1 West Haven vs. No. 4 Foran: If West Haven coach Mike Anquillare decides to hold ace Tom Lawrence for this game, West Haven has a shot. If not, West Haven is in trouble without a strong No. 2 option on the mound. Meanwhile, Foran essentially has two aces in Brian Ward and Joe Michaud so they get the edge.
Pick: Foran

No. 2 Law vs. No. 6 Notre Dame-West Haven: These two teams split in the regular season. But this Notre Dame squad doesn't appear to be the same one that beat the Lawmen 13-4 early in the year. Winning seven of their last eight and crushing the Green Knights 12-3 in the midst of the streak, the Lawmen have the momentum.

CHAMPIONSHIP
SATURDAY AT YALE FIELD, NOON

No. 2 Law vs. No. 4 Foran: Pitching is when gets these two Milford schools to the title game. Neither of these teams have won a SCC title. But there is a first time for everything. Law swept the season series, edging Foran twice. Not this time.
Pick: Foran

The SCC softball tournament begins Tuesday with the quarterfinal round. Below is Register beat writer Mike Pucci's prediction of how the tournament may unfold.

Quarterfinals

No. 8 North Haven at No. 1 Hand: Hand defeated the Indians twice this season, both by 4-2 finals. Home-field advantage, and a more experienced club, means Hand moves on.

No. 5 Lyman Hall at No. 4 Sheehan: Sheehan emerged with two, 1-0 extra-inning victories over its crosstown rival during the regular season. But my hunch here is that Lyman Hall finally finds a way to knock off the Titans.

No. 6 Derby at No. 3 Cheshire: Derby has enjoyed its best season (14-6) in years, and makes their first appearance in the SCC tournament. But Cheshire is deeper, and more talented, and the Rams will book a date into the semifinals.

No. 7 Amity at No. 2 Mercy: This is a rematch of last year's semifinal, won by Amity, which went on to win the crown. Although Amity made a late-season surge to make the SCC field, Mercy wins a close one here.

No. 1 Hand vs. No. 5 Lyman Hall: These teams did not meet during the regular season. Although Lyman Hall pitcher Lauren Zambrano will keep the Trojans in the game, Hand has too much offensively.

No. 2 Mercy vs. No. 3 Cheshire: Cheshire was the first team to beat Mercy this season, after the Rams emerged with a 2-1 victory on May 5. Mercy beat Cheshire, 2-0, in the season-opener. Expect another close contest, with Mercy coming out on top.

Final
Thursday
at West Haven, 7 p.m.

No. 1 Hand vs. No. 2 Mercy: Mercy won both meetings during the regular season. Both teams feature effective pitchers, solid defense and explosive offenses. However, Mercy walks off with the title.

Law proved last year's Class L title run was no fluke as it finished the regular season 16-4. Winning seven of their last eight, the second-seeded Lawmen will face No. 7 Shelton in the Southern Connecticut Conference quarterfinals Tuesday at Quigley Stadium at 4 p.m. Below, third baseman Josh Rouse talks about Law's success this season. East Haven junior Paul Spadacenta threw a perfect game in a 16-0 Easties win over North Branford. Spadecenta struck out nine in what was the first perfect game in school history. The win clinched a state tournament berth for East Haven.

Bogen struck out 18 against Watertown in a 2-1 win and struck out 11 and helped herlself with two hits in a 1-0 win over Naugatuck. Bogen tossed a two-hitter and got her 100th career hit against Torrington.

Senior went 8-for-15 (.533) last week with seven RBIs, four runs and three extra base hits.

The eight-team Southern Connecticut Conference tournament is set: West Haven, Notre Dame-West Haven, Shelton, Amity, Cheshire, Foran, Law and Branford. The seedings still have not been decided.

University of Notre Dame junior defenseman Sam Barnes of Branford was just named an NCAA All America for the 2009 season. Barnes is a former Branford Hornet defensemen and a Register All-Area and an All State selection. Barnes is one of 14 former Branford players who grace lacrosse rosters on NCAA Division I, II, and III schools across the nation.

Cheshire's Pat Herlihy shot a 4-over-par 75 to earn medalist laurels in Tuesday's SCC golf championship at New Haven Country Club. He edged out Brian Hughes of Fairifeld Prep by one. Check out Herlihy's video interview today at www.nhregister.com.

Also Tuesday, Branford and Hand won the SCC boys track championships in the Oronoque and Hammonasset Divisions, respectively.

In boys' lacrosse, Fairfield Prep won at Cheshire 19-12.

Branford senior George Dummar III was arrested today and has been charged with possession of less than 4 ounces of marijuana.
The Quinnipiac-bound righthander is 3-3 this season and threw a no-hitter earlier in the year against Wilbur Cross. Dummar III is also the Hornets' top hitter. He was a Register All-Area selection last season.

Rachele Fico went 4-for-4, including a triple, three runs and one RBI to lift No. 1 Masuk to a 6-0 victory. It was the Panthers' 70th-straight victory.

Fico also allowed just two hits and struck out 17.

Courtney Collins had both hits for No. 3 Lauralton Hall (16-2).

Behind a one-hitter from Joe Confrancesco, Notre Dame-West Haven blanked Amity 5-0 today. It was Cofrancesco's first start since returning from Tommy John surgery. Confrancesco will certainly bolster the rotation at the perfect time, as the postseason around the corner.
Also, Sean Goldrich moved into the No. 2 slot in the lineup and came up with a two-run home run in the Green Knights' 9-0 win over Xavier Friday. Matt Murray has given Notre Dame a spark, coming off the bench and moving into the leadoff spot the last two games as well. It was a needed-change as coach Lou Kessler was desperate to get some production from the top of lineup. Notre Dame dropped four of six before winning its last two games.

The spring SCC championships commence Tuesday with the golf tournament being held at New Haven Country Club. Fairfield Prep's Brian Hughes and Notre Dame-West Haven's Brian Engstrom should be among the favorites. The day begins at 8 a.m.

The conference's division track meets beging on Tuesday as well and continue through Thursday for both boys and girls. The SCC championships will be split up for the first time next week. The field events (javelin, discus, etc.) will be held at Amity (boys) and Sheehan (girls) on May 26, the day after Memorial Day, while the track events will be held at Sheehan on May 27.

All of the other SCC spring sports will hold its respective team championships next week

Bunnell pitcher Rachel Babineau struck out 13 on her way to throwing a perfect game in a 8-0 win over Stratford. Stephanie Sage (3-for-4) and Katie Catalvo (three RBIs) led the way for the Bulldogs’ offense. Bunnell improves to 13-5.

A four-run fourth inning highlighted Amity's 9-5 win over Shelton, clinching at least a share of the Southern Connecticut Conference Housatonic Division title.
If the Spartans beat host Cheshire tomorrow, they will win the championship outright. Amity has now been a part of the last six division championships.
Pinch hitter Ted Ballou had a two-run single, Vin Siena doubled twice and Anthony Aprile had two hits, scored two runs and drove in another to lead Amity. E.J. Ashworth threw well in relief, earning the save. Tom Carroll homered for Shelton.

Sam Barbessi hit a sixth-inning home run to lift the Masuk softball team to a 1-0 victory over Lauralton Hall on Thursday.

Senior pitcher Rachele Fico allowed just two hits, walked two, hit one batter and struck out 21 for the No. 1 Panthers (18-0), who have won 69 straight games.

Nikki Maier had a single, was hit by a pitch, walked and stole four bases for No. 2 Lauralton Hall (15-1).

Another gem by West Haven pitcher Tommy Lawrence in 5-1 win over Notre Dame clinched the Westies first Southern Connecticut Conference Quinnipiac Division title since sharing the championship with Xavier in 2004. The win snapped Xavier's streak of three straight division titles.
Lawrence allowed just four hits and struck out 10 to improve to 6-0. John Ascenzia went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Tony D'Addio added two RBIs. Conor Keniry doubled and tripled for Notre Dame.

Ryan Genua’s two-run single highlighted a three-run fifth inning for the Woodland baseball team, which upset previously-undefeated and top-ranked Seymour 3-2 Wednesday afternoon in a Naugatuck Valley League win at Beacon Falls.

This was Seymour’s first loss in the NVL since losing to Woodland on May 11, 2007.

Nick Boucher had an RBI double and Jaqson Skibek had six strikeouts and eight walks for the Hawks (9-7). Garrett Cornwell struck out three for the Wildcats (15-1).

Kim Bogen struck out 18 batters for the Seymour softball team in a 2-1 NVL win over host Watertown.
Steph Burt had an RBI double and Meryl Ragaini had a run-scoring single for No. 3 Seymour (15-0).

The Seymour baseball team also beat Watertown 2-1. John Murphy pitched four innings of no-hit relief, and Chris Renzoni’s solo homer in the fifth inning snapped a tie game.
Dan Perez had a single and double and Renzoni gave up one hit in three innings before giving way to Murphy for Seymour (15-0).
Bob Delaney had a third-inning single for Watertown (5-9).

SOFTBALL
Masuk 3, Bunnell 0: Rachel Fico struck out 12 batters in a three-hit shutout and helped her own cause by going 3-for-4 at the plate in Masuk’s win at Stratford.
Sam Barbessi had two hits for Masuk, which improved to 14-0. Lissy Houlton went 2-for-3 with a double for Bunnell (11-4).

Cheshire 6, Sheehan 0: Linda Amarante allowed one hit and stuck out a career-high 14 batters for the Rams in this SCC Housatonic Division win at Wallingford.
Katie Lamb singled in the bottom of the seventh inning for Sheehan (6-8).

With a 6-0 divisional mark, Law has clinched the Southern Connecticut Conference Hammonasset Division.
Amity sits atop the Housatonic Division at 5-1, following a 3-0 win over Sheehan today. Cheshire has its hands full with five games this week. The Rams and Spartans will play Saturday at noon. Amity won the first meeting. Both have one divisional loss. Shelton, which has two divisional losses, is also in the mix. Shelton lost to Cheshire and knocked off Amity. The Gaels play both this week. Prediction: Amity.
The Quinnipiac Division will come down to the West Haven and Notre Dame-West Haven game Wednesday. West Haven won the first meeting and can clinch its first divisional title since 2003 with a win. If the Green Knights win, they clinch a share of the championship. Predicition: West Haven.
Lastly is the Oronoque. This division's landscape will become a lot clearer Thursday when Branford and North Haven meet. Career is also in the mix. The Panthers have division games against East Haven and Wilbur Cross left. Prediction: Branford.

Kate Lamb had a two-run triple in the first inning to lift the host Sheehan softball team to a 3-0
SCC Housatonic Division winover Amity at Wallingford.
Sarah Murray scored on a bunt single by Mollie Hamel in the fifth inning and Dani Thuerling tossed a three-hitter for Sheehan (6-7, 3-2). Amity is 7-7.

Naugatuck 4, Sacred Heart 0: Julia Longo had two hits, including a double, a run and an RBI to lead the host Greyhounds to a Naugatuck Valley League win.

Alexis Granahan had two hits, including a double, a run and an RBI, and Corinna Hussey drove in two runs for Naugatuck (13-1), which is ranked fifth in the Register Poll.

Former Hillhouse boys' basketball standout Mike Moore has chosen to transfer to Hofstra University after spending his first two seasons at Fordham.
Moore, a shooting guard, will sit out next season due to NCAA Division I regulations before joining the Pride, a member of the Colonial Athletic Association. It was the only official visit Moore made after deciding to transfer. Moore, 20, also considered Fairfield, Creighton, Northeastern and Virginia Commonwealth.
"I visited Northeastern (during my senior year of high school) and I didn't want to go out there (to Creighton)," Moore said. "Because of the location, the coaching staff and the players, I felt really good with (Hofstra, located in Hempstead, N.Y.)."
Moore, the 2007 Register State Player of the Year, started 23 games for the Rams last season and finished as the team's second leading scorer (12.8 ppg.). He also averaged 4.5 rebounds and added 29 assists, 27 steals and three blocked shots.
Moore said he doesn't regret going there, but felt it was best to move on from Fordham, which finished last in the Atlantic-10 and had a 3-25 overall record under Dereck Whittenburg.
"I don't regret coming to Fordham. I made a lot of friends there, but basketball-wise, it was no longer what I wanted," said Moore, who is 6-foot-5, 192 pounds. "I could take the yelling (from Whittenburg) as long as it is working and we are winning. But I wasn't seeing any results from it. We weren't heading in the same direction. I wasn't confident and I didn't feel like it was still the right place for me."
Hofstra wentr 21-11 last year under Tom Pecora.
"He (Pecora) wants me to come in and be an impact player," Moore said.

John Powers has seen the mound sparingly for Hopkins this season due to an elbow injury, but today the senior righthander went the distance and picked up the win as the Hilltoppers beat Hamden Hall 3-2.
It was a pitcher's duel. Powers struck out six, allowed just five hits and two runs. Austin French, a freshman lefthander, struck out seven, allowed just four hits and two earned runs. French may be the next on the list of standout Hamden Hall pitchers. As for Powers, he looks ready for the Fairchester League playoffs alongside Hopkins talented staff of Ian Bezahler and Ted Clark.

Samantha Sanchez had two hits to lead the host Wilbur Cross softball team to a 7-5 victory over Branford in a SCC Oronoque Division win at New Haven.

Shanilya Bush had two hits and two RBIs for Wilbur Cross (3-7), which trailed 5-0 after the first inning. Branford is 7-7.

In other softball games:

Hopkins 18, Hamden Hall 0 (5): Tara Gambardella pitched a no-hitter, walked one and struck out 15 to lead the host Hilltoppers to a prep school win at New Haven.
Lexi Parr had a three-run triple for Hopkins (10-2).

Bunnell 5, New Fairfield 1: Rachel Babineau pitched a three-hitter and struck out 12 to lead the host Bulldogs to a South-West Conference victory at Stratford.
Kate Cataldo had a triple and three RBIs and Tara Gleason had two hits and an RBI for Bunnell (11-3).

Winners of five straight, Shelton was crushing the ball until it faced Sheehan ace Ryan Moore today. Moore, a junior, shut down the Gaels, holding them to just two hits and no runs in a 1-0 Sheehan win.
Tim Bickford drove in Connor Terragna for the deciding run in the sixth inning. Shelton is a half game behind Amity and Cheshire in the Southern Connecticut Conference Housatonic Division.
In other games, Mike Rubino knocked in Jonathan Padilla in the 10th inning to lift Career over North Haven. Pat Simone moved to 4-0 with Branford’s 3-1 win over East Haven. There’s now a three-way tie for first place in the SCC Oronoque Division. Coginchaug edged Valley Regional 4-3. The Blue Devils have now won 10 of its last 11. In a battle of two Milford schools Law beat Foran 6-5. Brett Michael Doran went 4-for-4 with four RBIs for Law. The Lawmen have done everything but lock up the SCC Hammonasset Division. Hamden edged Xavier 3-2 as the Green Dragons picked up their first win in SCC Quinnipiac Division play and, surprisingly, it took Notre Dame-West Haven nine innings to knock off Fairfield Prep 6-2. Seymour is clearly the most dominant team in the Naugatuck Valley League, crushing Holy Cross, perhaps the second-best team in the league, 10-0.

Christine Akcer tossed a three-hitter and struck out 10 as the Law softball team defeated crosstown rival Foran 4-0.

Lyman Hall 3, Cheshire 2: Lauren Zambrano struck out 13 as the Trojans knocked off Cheshire, the No. 8 team in the Register Top 10 poll, in SCC Housatonic Division play.

Kim Silva went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Cheshire (9-3). Lyman Hall improves to 10-3.

Bunnell 1, Pomperaug 0 (9): Stephanie Sage scored on a passed ball to lift the Bulldogs to an extra-inning win over the Panthers in South-West Conference play at Southbury.

Rachel Babineau struck out 13 and went 2-for-4 with a double for the Bulldogs (10-3). Pomperaug falls to 11-3.

Joe Beler, Jr. has been named football coach at Notre Dame of Fairfield, replacing Jason Hart.
Beler has spent the past six seasons as defensive coordinator at Law, where he is also a teacher. He worked under Mark Robinson.
Prior to that, Beler was the head coach at Foran, leading the Lions to a South-West Conference championship in 2001.

Nick Georgalas and Mike Manzo had three-run homers as visiting Shelton defeated No. 8 Law 8-4 in a Southern Connecticut Conference interdivision baseball game Monday.

Mike Sarni also homered and Tom Carroll had two hits for the Gaels (8-4).

Brett Doran and Andrew Plaskon had fifth-inning homers for Law (9-3).


Fairfield Prep 2, Career 1: Jon DiMartino scored the winning run on Matt Pekar’s sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the seventh inning for the Jesuits in this SCC interdivision win at Fairfield.

Ray Buckley and John Blagys each had two hits for Fairfield Prep (6-5).
Kyle Craven had two hits and scored for the Panthers (5-5).

In softball action:

Lyman Hall 1, Foran 0: Lauren Zambrano tossed a one-hitter, struck out 14 and had an RBI double in the first inning in the host Trojans’ SCC interdivision victory.

Sage Esposito broke up the no-hitter with a leadoff double in the seventh inning for Foran

North Haven 2, Mercy 1: Jenn Cruver scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the host Indians to a SCC interdivision win.

Cruver also scattered six hits, struck out eight and had two hits for North Haven (7-5).

Amber Donovan had two hits for Mercy (10-2).

Entering today's game against Sheehan, Foran is winners of five straight after starting the season 2-3. The Lions should be a factor in the Southern Connecticut Conference tournament, as well the Class M tournament. Foran made a run to the Class M semifinals before falling to Holy Cross. Joe Michaud and Brian Ward give the Lions perhaps the best one-two punch on the mound in the SCC and one of the best in the state. Read more about the Lions in tomorrow's New Haven Register.

Hand jumped into the Register Top 10 Softball Poll this week despite going 1-1 last week. Hand lost to Mercy 4-2 but then defeated Cheshire 7-6.

Shelton's Peter Jay threw a three-hitter and Tom Carroll and Mike Sarni each went 1-for-3, with Carroll driving in a run with a double in the fourth inning to lead the Gaels to a 3-1 upset over No. 4 Notre Dame.

Gaels' coach Scott Gura said Dan St. George made two outstanding defensive plays in center.

Dan Mercado had a home run for Notre Dame-West Haven, which drops to 9-2.

Shelton is 7-4 with wins over NDWH and Amity.

In a battle of two of the Southern Connecticut Conference's top baseball teams, West Haven led Cheshire 2-1 thanks to a two-RBI double by Dave Riccio before the game was called in the third inning due to rain. The game will start from the beginning Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Cheshire.

Xavier rallied to score a pair of runs in the seventh inning to lift the Falcons to a 3-2 win over Amity. Hayden Stanton drove in Oliver Hart with a single for the game-winning run. The Spartans have now dropped four of their last five.

Anna Marcucilli’s single scored Allison Fountain from second base for the game-winning run in the sixth inning as the Cheshire softball team edged Mercy, 2-1, on Friday in Middletown. Both teams are ranked in the Register Top 10 Poll.

No. 5 Mercy (10-1) suffered its first loss.

Fountain went 3-for-4 at the plate, and Linda Amarante scattered three hits to pick up the win for the No. 8 Rams (8-2).

East Haven 4, Foran 3: Alex Wynne had three hits and an RBI to lead the visiting Easties to a SCC interdivision win at Milford.

Ashley Borchert had three hits and scored twice for East Haven (5-6).

Foran falls to 6-5.

The CIAC has announced it will waive its rule to play athletic regular-season games on Sunday if schools are closed for an extended period of time due to the recent swint flu outbreaks.
Thus far, no athletic events in the area have been postponed due to the outbreak.
The CIAC will allow the playing of any events if both schools agree to the event being played despite one of the schools being closed because of the outbreak.
