NH Register Team of the Week returns!

HAMDEN — It could be considered a silver lining and a sign of hope in what has been a sub-par season so far for the Hamden boys’ hockey team. Well, at least by Green Dragons standards.

Goalie Matt Hoff made 29 saves as Hamden played to a 2-2 tie with No. 3 Xavier on Jan. 9. Then Mike DeMatteis scored a pair of goals to lead the Green Dragons to a 3-2 victory over rival West Haven three days later, helping Hamden earn Register Team of the Week honors.

“As I told the kids, we can’t feel sorry for ourselves,” Hamden coach Bill Verneris said. “The only way to get out of the hole is to keep working.”

Boys' soccer all-area team

The drive from Madison to Fairfield is about 40 minutes. It can be longer if there’s traffic.

But it’s one Fairfield Prep’s Will Steiner (pictured above) has made almost daily over the last four years.

The Madison resident, and arguably the state’s best high school goalie, said he makes the trip because of the relationship he’s formed with the sport of soccer and Fairfield Prep.

check out more on Steiner, plus a link to a photo slideshow of the Register's All-Area team
