Baseball roundup

Cheshire won its sixth straight with a 5-0 victory over Hamden. Brad Runowicz drove in three runs for the Rams. Cheshire will have a tough test Friday with West Haven. Morgan lost its first game of the year, a 7-4 defeat at the hands of Cromwell. Law jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and held on to knock off Amity 3-2. Amity's Baker tosses perfect game

Cochran out as New London football coach

The Day of New London has reported that Jack Cochran, who led the school to the Class SS state football championship last December, has been removed as football coach.
According to the Day, Christopher Clouet, the superintendent of schools in New London, made the decision. Cochran had held an illegal practice in his short tenure as baseball coach. He resigned on March 5, not too long after being hired at his alma mater.
Cochran, who also coached football at Bloomfield and New Britain, led the Whalers to three state championship games in his four seasons at New London. He will remain as a health teacher at the school.

Today's Top Baseball Performances

There were a handful of close games today on the area high school baseball scene.
Josh Rouse went 3-for-4 and knocked in Brett Michael Doran the game’s only run as Law edged Foran 1-0 in eight innings. The Lawmen haven’t allowed a run yet this season.
Dennis McGinley scored the game-winning run on an error to lift Guilford over Hand 2-1. McGinley went 2-for-3. Craig Schlitter struck out nine to pick up the win. The Indians continue to prove it is no rebuilding year in Guilford.
Eric Romano had two hits, an RBI and scored as Notre Dame-West Haven squeezed by Fairfield Prep 3-2. The Green Knights have an intriguing matchup Friday with Law.
Al Simeone blasted a grand slam to lift Xavier to a 5-4 victory over Hamden.
Tim Geer had three hits and two RBIs as Derby rallied to score three runs in the seventh inning and beat Wilbur Cross 3-2.
For more results, check out tomorrow’s Register.

Cheshire edges Lyman Hall

Christina Orcutt hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to lead the Cheshire softball team to a 3-1 comeback victory over Lyman Hall.

The Rams (1-1) had just one hit off Lyman Hall (2-1) pitcher Lauren Zambrano through six innings.

Read the game story in Tuesday's Register.

In other softball action, Taylor McMahon’s single drove in Christina Gelardi to lift Derby to a 2-1 eight-inning victory over North Haven.

Julie DeFranco came within one out of a no-hitter and struck out 10 to lead North Branford to a 3-0 win over Coginchaug.

First pitch: Softball season opens Wednesday

The high school softball season begins on Wednesday. Below is a list of some of the top games on the schedule:

Woodland at Seymour, 3:30 p.m.: Both teams have the talent to win the NVL title.

Mercy at Cheshire, 3:45 p.m.: This is a meeting between two schools that should contend for the SCC championship.

Hamden at Amity, 3:45 p.m.: Peter Zoppi takes over at Hamden, while Bob Purcell is in his first year at Amity. Both programs lost their pitchers to graduation, so this one could be one of the more interesting openers.

West Haven at Lyman Hall, 3:45 p.m.: Both of these teams are predicated to do well this season, and possibly even move into the upper echelon of the SCC.

Masuk at Waterford, 4:15 p.m.: Masuk has won the last two Class LL titles. Waterford finished as the runner-up in Class L the last two years.

Opening Day

The high school baseball season kicks off tomorrow. Here's a look at some intriguing opening-day games...

  • Greenwich at Westhill, 3 p.m. : Two FCIAC powerhouses clash.
  • Branford at Guilford, 3:45 p.m.: Hornets' ace George Dummar will take the mound. Guilford will try to prove it is still among the SCC's elite.
  • Xavier at Amity, 3:45 p.m.: Like Guilford, the Spartans hope significant losses from last season don't get in the way of traditional success. A tough Xavier squad will be the first test.
  • Berlin at Masuk, 3:45 p.m.: Matt Carasiti will pitch against the Class LL runner-up Panthers.

Cheshire a Sleeper?

Some are expecting the Cheshire baseball team to be a surprise and make some noise in the SCC this season. The Rams didn't lose much from last year. Pitcher Eric Ostroski was an all-division selection last season and shortstop Steven Howard hit safely in all 21 games while batting .388.

Coming Tuesday: Softball Preview

In Tuesday's editions, the Register will preview the 2009 softball season.

Included in the preview will be a feature on Seymour, which has won seven state titles but none since 2006. Pitcher Kim Bogen and her fellow seniors will have one last chance at a state title after falling short in heart-breaking fashion the past two seasons.

Also look for the Top 25 Players to Watch in the state, the Top 10 must-see games this season and the Top 5 Questions that will be answered by the time the season ends, as well as a preview of area conferences.

Who will be ranked No. 1? Give us your opinion below, and then find out on Tuesday.

Farrell Eyeing Turnaround

Former Naugatuck standout Jeff Farrell takes over as Wilbur Cross' head baseball coach this season. He hopes to get the Governors back to the state tournament after a two-year absence. Farrell was instrumental in Southern Connecticut State's first trip to the Division II College World Series in 2005. The lefthander also played in the Boston Red Sox farm system and for the New Haven County Cutters.

HOCKEY: ALL-STATE AND ALL-AREA TEAMS TO BE ANNOUNCED

The All-State boys' hockey team is scheduled to appear in the New Haven Register on April 12. The All-Area boys' hockey team is tentatively scheduled for April 11. Stay tuned for updates.

LACROSSE: THE EXCITEMENT BEGINS

Despite the wet weather lately, it hasn't put a damper on the anticipation of a new season bright outlook for many New Haven area boys' and girls' teams.
The usual suspects in the boys' Southern Connecticut Conference have talent, including SCC and CIAC Class L champion Fairfield Prep, Cheshire, Branford, Amity and Guilford.
"We have our share of talent but no game in our league is ever a gimme," Cheshire coach Rich Pulisciano said. "Prep lost a great deal of talent from last year but they have a lot of talent back too. We like our chances but Prep is still the team to beat. Branford, Amity and Guilford have some great players too."
With the consant rain that fell Friday, Pulisciano called off practice and made it a "buddy day." He took the entire team bowling after school.
"We do things like this once in awhile," Pulisiciano said. "We call it a buddy day because it helps build camaraderie and friendship and it's a good break from the daily grind of practice. The players love it."

HOCKEY-STATE TITLES STILL FEELING SWEET

I recently ran into Cheshire boys' hockey coach Jim Riccitelli and Hamden boys' hockey coach Bill Verneris and - rightly so - they were still beaming weeks after they won their respective state titles. Hamden defeated Glastonbury for the CIAC Division I title and Cheshire defeated Enfield for the CIAC Division II title.
"Words still can't describe how great this feeling is, to win my first state title," Verneris said. "This memory and the faces of every player on my team will stay with me forever. This was really a reflection of how hard the players worked and dedicated themselves to go as far as they did. The camaraderie and chemistry was unbelievable from day one."
Riccitelli said, "No matter how much talent you have you never know how it will all turn out. It was a great season, one that I will never forget and one we're still talking about. Every player on our roster came to play and every player gave 100 percent effort whether it was in practice or in a game. We certainly had a special group of players."
