Fico breaks national mark
Masuk senior pitcher Rachele Fico broke the national record for career perfect games after pitching her 21st in a 9-0 victory over Bethel on Thursday.
Fico broke the previous mark of 20 set by Melissa Marzan, of Fresno, Calif. from 1998-2001.
Fico struck out all 21 batters she faced.
The win also qualified Masuk (8-0), the No. 1 team in the Register Poll, for the Class LL state tournament. The Panthers have won the past two titles in that class.
In other games, Mallorie Dorflinger scored on an error with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead Coginchaug to a 3-2 victory over Hale-Ray. Read the game story in Friday's Register.
