Tripleheader at Harbor Yard postponed

Saturday's tripleheader scheduled for the Ballpark at Harbor yard in Bridgeport was postponed Friday due to possible inclement weather. Two have already been rescheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday: Shelton at Amity and Xavier at Foran. The Seymour-St. Joseph game is ppd. indefinitely.

State Open Swimming Recap

The boys' swimming State Open championship took place Saturday at Yale's Kiphuth Pool. Some highlights:

Greenwich wins 27th title since 1973. Fellow FCIAC members Darien, Ridgefield and New Canaan finished second through fourth. Defending champion Pomperaug was fifth.

Among area teams, Xavier was 9th, Amity was 14th and Branford was 17th.

Amity junior Eric Holden wins the 100 breaststroke, finishing in a State Open record time of 56.37 seconds. It was the second straight title in that event for Holden, who has also won two straight Class L titles. Holden was also third in the 200 individual medley.

Ridgefield senior Andrew Klutey wins the 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle, and swam on the winning 200 freestyle relay team, and on the 400 freestyle relay team that was third.

Xavier senior Kevin Kosciuk was second in the 200 IM.

Haddam-Killingworth senior Ryan Buys was second in the 100 butterfly.

Senior Michael Dustin led Greenwich by winning the 100 butterfly and third in the 50 freestyle. Dustin also swam on the winning 400 freestyle relay team.

Other area swimmers earning medals were:
Cheshire sophomore Gregory Han (sixth in the 200 IM, third in the 100 breaststroke) and Notre Dame-West Haven junior Nicholas Celestin (sixth in the 100 backstroke).

Xavier's Kosciuk wins individual medley

Xavier senior Kevin Kosciuk won the 200 yard individual medley, finishing in a school-record time of 1:54.69, at the Class LL state championship. Kosciuk finished second last season.

Ridgefield's Brian Bollerman, who won the event last season, finished second in 1:55.20.

Class LL swimming begins at 7:15 p.m.

Greenwich is seeking its 18th straight title. Fairfield Prep and Xavier should each vie for a top 3 finish. Check back for updates about the Class LL meet throughout the night.

Four advance to N.E. Wrestling final

Four local wrestlers have advanced to the championship final of the New England Wrestling tournament Saturday at the New Haven Athletic Center. They are:


130: Ed Carroll, Hand
160: Dillon Carter, Hale-Ray
215: Pat Gillen, Shelton
285: Joe Demichele, Hand

Finals are expected to begin at 7:30 p.m.

Updated New England Wrestling Brackets

Click here to see updated brackets from the New England wrestling tournament, being held at the New Haven Athletic Center. Action continues on Saturday. Championship finals are expected to be contested at 7:30 p.m.



At 103, Hand's Will Criso has advanced to the championship quarterfinals. As did Hand's Ed Carroll (130), Hale-Ray's Dillon Carter (160), Shelton's Pat Gillen and Xavier's Sean Marinan at 215, and Hand's Joe Demichele at 285.

Fairfield Prep wins SCC swimming

Fairfield Prep won its seventh straight SCC swimming championship Wednesday despite winning just one event.

Xavier was second and Amity was third.

Amity junior Eric Holden won the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke and was named the meet's most outstanding swimmer.

Notre Dame-West Haven junior Nick Celestin won the 100 backstroke and the 100 butterfly.

Lyman Hall freshman Kyle Neri was first in the 100 freestyle and finished second in the 50 freestyle behind Sheehan's Jared Thurston.

Hand trails by 2 at State Open Wrestling

After Friday's portion of the State Open wrestling championship, Hand trails Bacon Academy by two points (47-45). Xavier is third with 34 points.

Championship semifinals will be contested at noon Saturday. Championship finals are expected to begin at 5:30 p.m. at the New Haven Athletic Center.
