Hurricane Sandy continues to have its effect on high school sports in Connecticut.
The CIAC made changes to its fall state tournament schedules today (read the story at  http://bit.ly/QUVNss.
As a result Southern Connecticut Conference commissioner Al Carbone has announced adjusted schedules for all SCC tournaments this week as well for girls' volleyball, field hockey, boys' and girls' soccer and girls' swimming.
Adjusted SCC schedules are below. Note that the SCC girls' swim meet scheduled for Thursday at Southern Connecticut State's Moore Fieldhouse has been moved to Monday at 6 p.m. at the same site.

Hurricane Sandy has had an impact on the SCC field hockey and girls volleyball tournaments, among others.

There will be more to come, including the possibility of the CIAC pushing back the start of its tournament on Monday. A decision is expected on Wednesday.

Hurricane Sandy certainly had its impact on New Haven area high school sports teams, including girls’ swimming and field hockey, forcing cancelations and postponements of practices and games.
One of the hardest hit programs is the Seymour girls’ swim team, which is in the process of preparing for the upcoming Naugatuck Valley League swim and diving championships.
“Most of Seymour is out of power,” Seymour girls’ swim coach Missy Orosz said. “A lot of my team is still stuck in their neighborhoods because several trees are still blocking roads.
The high school is out of power (as of noon Tuesday) so we haven't been in the water since Saturday."
The NVL swim trials are tentatively scheduled to be held on Thursday at Kennedy High in Waterbury at 4 p.m. The diving competition is scheduled for Friday at either Kennedy or Woodland (to be determined Wednesday) at 4 p.m. The NVL swim finals are at Kennedy on Saturday at 4 p.m.
“I am hoping that power is restored soon,” Orosz said. “We might look into our local Ansonia YMCA to snag pool time, but they have no power right now."
Orosz also said NVL League commissioners will update the status of league tournament schedules for all sports on Wednesday.
Like most teams, the Branford girls’ swim team has missed practice time on Monday and today (Tuesday).
“We have missed opportunities to swim yesterday and today but I am hopeful that we can squeeze in a practice tomorrow (Wednesday),” Branford girls’ swim coach Scott Butler said. “I hope that the missed workouts will minimally affect those of us training for states (CIAC Class L-M-S and State Open meets)."
Amity girls’ swim coach Todd Rainey said, “We missed practice on Monday and Tuesday. I do believe that the pool at Orange (Orange Community Pool) does have power. We hope to be back in the water tomorrow but we'll have to wait and see about any school closure.
“The timing of this storm was not ideal in terms of SCC Championship preparation, but we'll do the best we can. It certainly could have been much worse."
The Lauralton Hall field hockey team has been trying to reschedule its last regular season game with Amity since it has seeding implications for the post season.
“We are still trying to play our regular season game versus Amity,” Lauralton Hall coach Theresa Napolitano said. “We need to schedule this before either team plays a league playoff game. Thursday is the last day to get it in (for the CIAC to count it toward postseason seeding).
“The SWC (South-West Conference) tournament starts with the semifinal round Thursday but if we end up with a conflict and play Amity that day, then that semifinal game may be pushed to another day. Barring any field or school issues we will try to schedule the Amity game for tomorrow (Wednesday)."

Here is a schedule update for the Naugatuck Valley League girls' swimming and diving championships this week.
The swim trials are at Kennedy High at 4 p.m. on Thursday, the diving competition is at either Kennedy or Woodland on Friday at 4 p.m. and the swimming finals are at Kennedy on Saturday at 4 p.m.
"All of this revised scheduling is weather permitting," Seymour girls' swim coach Missy Orosz said.

Amity swimmer Dana Grindall, a two-time Register girls’ swimming MVP and All-American who competed at the United States Olympic swim trials in Omaha, Neb. in June, has decided to commit to the University of Wisconsin.

“It feels good to have that decision made, I'm so excited,” Grindall said. “Wisconsin has a good swim program and I like the school."

At the Olympic Trials, Grindall was 27^th in the 100 butterfly in 1:00.28 and 61^st in the 200 butterfly in 2:16.48.

This season at Amity she broke school records in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.75) and the 200 freestyle (1:54.4).

Miranda Garcia had a goal and an assist to lead the fifth-ranked Cheshire field hockey team to a 3-0 win over Lyman Hall in Wallingford on Wednesday to clinch their second straight Southern Connecticut Conference regular season title.

The Rams made it easy for their two goalies Maddy Levy and Lauren Fountain as Cheshire outshot Lyman Hall 20-0. Kathleen Lima and Olivia Larson added goals for the Rams.
The Rams clinched the title with a 10-0 SCC record and end the regular season with A 16-2 record.
Goalie Alexa Rubano made 10 saves for the Trojans (5-8-2-1, 2-9-1-1).

MILFORD — It’s become a lot easier for senior captain Sarah Irvine to talk about her team’s success as the season has progressed.

The days of the Law girls’ soccer team being a guaranteed win for most opponents fall further into the past as time goes on.

“I think that when we go to other schools, there’s always that expectation that they’re going to walk away with a win,” Irvine said. “And I think we’ve really changed that mentality this year.”

The Southern Connecticut Conference division winners are all but decided for the girls:

Hand is the SCC Hammonasset Division champion.
Cheshire won the SCC Housatonic Division on Wednesday after tying Shelton.
Mercy beat Hamden on Wednesday to clinch the SCC Quinnipiac Division.
Branford and North Haven share the SCC Oronoque. East Haven can make it a three-way tie by beating Wilbur Cross.

The boys divisions are all still up in the air except for the SCC Oronoque. The NH Register did not get a score report from the Branford-East Haven game scheduled for Wednesday night. If Branford won, it clinched the division crown. If not, then its Branford vs. North Haven for all the marbles Friday night, weather permitting.

Also on Friday, Xavier hosts Fairfield Prep at 3:45 p.m. The winner takes the Quinnipiac.

On Thursday, if Amity wins at Sheehan, the Spartans win the Housatonic. A tie, and Shelton can earn a share by winning at Cheshire Saturday at 6 p.m. A loss by Amity and Shelton can earn it outright, or Amity clinches if Cheshire beats Shelton.

Hand wins the SCC Hammonasset by beating or tying Guilford at the Surf Club Saturday night at 6 p.m. Guilford earns a share with a win.

Allison Denny had 15 kills and was 16-16 serving, Kathryn Pisano had 32 assists and was 10-10 serving and Claire Foster added 20 digs as Amity handed Cheshire its first loss of the season in a 3-2 victory in Woodbridge.
Amanda Palladino had 22 kills and five blocks; Lisa Walle had 17 kills and six digs and Sarah Rodgers contributed 45 assists and 10 digs for Cheshire (13-1) in the loss to Amity (11-3).

It was a night Law soccer fans won’t soon forget.

First, the Law girls’ team beat Hand 1-0 Tuesday at home. It was the first time Law beat Hand in school history.

Just hours later, the Law boys’ team won at West Haven 2-1. Not only was it the Lawmen’s first win of the season, it was their first win since 2008. Law had just two ties since, both in 2009.

“The kids were smiling ear to ear, including myself (at practice Wednesday),” Law coach Donato Piselli said. “We were ahead at halftime and West Haven tied it up. To come back in thrilling fashion at the end is something they enjoyed and something they want to do again.”

The Foran boys’ basketball program is holding the second Foran Hoops Mad Dash 5K Road Race/Fitness Walk on Sunday, Oct. 14 at the high school.
The race will begin at 9 a.m. and is open to individuals of all ages and abilities. All pre-registered participants will receive a road race T-shirt. Trophies will be awarded to top finishers in each age division.
All proceeds from the race will go directly to the Foran boys’ basketball program.

The Southern Connecticut Conference football game Friday night pitting third-ranked Hand at top-ranked Xavier will be played at Palmer Field.

Xavier has won 30 straight games. Hand has won 15. Something has to give.

The Connecticut Lacrosse Hall of Fame committee announced on Monday seven new members, including former Hand, Cheshire, West Haven and Hamden boys' coach Jeff Gull, will be inducted at a banquet at the Aqua Turf in Southington on Nov. 11 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. 
Also selected are Ted Garber, who coached boys lacrosse at Loomis Chaffee and is currently coach of the the Ohio Machine of Major League Lacrosse; Liz Grote, a former Simsbury and Vermont player who is coaching at Bowdoin College; Jamie Hanford, a former player at Darien and Loyola with professional stints in the National Lacrosse League and Major League Lacrosse; Pam Hammersmith, who started the Simsbury girls lacrosse program in 1982; Will Hunter, who passed away in 1996, started the boys' lacrosse program at Conard in 1963; and Randy McCue, a football and men's lacrosse standout at UConn who started the boys' lacrosse program at Norwalk in 1976. 
According to the Connecticut Lacrosse Hall of Fame press release, in 1979 in Gull's first head coaching job, he won his first sixteen games as a high school head coach and took Hand to the state championship game where it lost to Wilton 7-5. The following year he again guided Hand to the state championship final.
Gull left Hand in 1984 to start a new boys' program at Cheshire where he was named Coach of the Year in 1985. During his twenty-seven year career as a head coach he amassed over 200 wins and a winning percentage of almost 60 percent at numerous schools across the state, including Cheshire, Hand (twice), Guilford, Hall, Hamden, Holy Cross, Norwich Free Academy and finally at West Haven. Gull is credited with starting youth programs in Madison (1981), Guilford (1990) and Southington (1993).

The Seymour girls' swim team will be hosting its second annual "Swim for Hope" swim meet on Friday at 4 p.m. at the Seymour High pool on 2 Botsford Road in Seymour.
The Wildcats will face St. Joseph-Trumbull . Both teams will be wearing special swim caps and providing concessions to raise money for the Seymour Pink Organization.
"All are welcomed to cheer on their favorite team and support cancer research and girls swimming," Seymour swim coach Missy Orosz said in a prepared statement. "Our (Seymour) co-captain Katherine Acquavella has organized this event the past two seasons. Mrs. Mary Deming, the founder of Seymour Pink, is an alumna from St. Joseph-Trumbull. She is a teacher at Seymour and founded the whole Seymour Pink Organization on behalf of her mother."

Sheehan 3, Hand 2: Ali Sperrazza had 15 kills and 12 digs, Makayla Ricci had 10 kills and 5 aces, Katie Read had 22 digs and five aces, Meghan Gavin had 26 assists, Meg Fekete 13 assists, seven aces as the Titans defeatd the Tigers in Madison.
Hand’s (2-8) Cassidy Wygonik had 16 kills and five blocks and Kyle Maxwell added 23 serves, four aces and 19 digs in the loss to Sheehan (6-4).

BEST OF THE REST

Amity 3, Guilford 2:  Sydnee Sousa had 12 kills, Kathryn Pisano had 28 assists and was 12-for-12 serving and Amanda Vecchio was 16-for-16 serving with four aces as the Spartans got past the Indians in Woodbridge.
Guilford (5-5) Caitlin Sobolewski had 13 kills, 11 digs and six aces. Taylor White added 20 assists, eight digs and five kills and Sam Grinold had 12 digs, 14 service points and four aces in a losing effort to Amity (8-2).
Bunnell 3, Oxford 0: Erica Shannon had seven kills and four service points, Taylor Jean-Guillaume had eight service points, seven kills and eight digs and Jessica Bogdwicz added nine service points, 28 assists and six digs as the Bulldogs defeated the Wolverines in Stratford.
Cheshire 3, Law 0: Lisa Walle had nine kills and seven aces, Becca Ligi had 10 kills, Maria Buzzeli had 14 digs and Sarah Rodgers had 34 assists as the Rams remained undefeated with a victory over the Eagles.
Law’s (3-7) Rachel Hannan had 10 digs and six kills and Caitlin Prete had six kills and 13 digs in the loss to Cheshire (10-0).
Foran 3, Shelton 0: Fallon Bevino had 15 kills, Rebekah DeRosa had seven aces and 30 assists and Abby Amann added seven kills and three assists for the Lions in a victory over the Gaelettes in Milford.
Shelton’s (3-7) Kaitlyn Giangregorio had eight blocks, Gina Orazietti addeed seven digs and two kills, Nicole Beard nine assists in the loss to Foran (7-3).
Kennedy 3, Ansonia 0: Morgan Westine had 22 assists, two kills and Shaylah Dobson had nine kills and two blocks as the Chargers fell to Kennedy in Ansonia.
Lyman Hall 3, Hillhouse 1: Melanie Schanke had 16 kills, three aces and 14 digs, Ally Hackett added 36 assists and four kills and senior outside hitter Emily Williams had seven kills, two aces and 11 digs and the Trojans defeated the Academics 3-1 in Wallingford.
Hillhouse’s (3-7) Khadijah Kenyon’s had six kills and nine digs in the loss to Lyman Hall (7-3).
Mercy 3, Wilbur Cross 0: Mercy’s Shytasia Williams served 24-for-25 with six aces and Hanna Jones served 19-for-19 with eight aces as the Tigers defeated the Governors in Middletown.
Sacred Heart 3, North Haven 1: Erin Kent had eight kills and three blocks, Cameron Maselli had 19 digs and six kills, and Jamie Falcha had 14 service points and 18 digs for Sacred Heart in a win over the Indians in Hamden.
For North Haven (3-6), Brianna Carfora 13 kills and five aces, and Morgan Schaff had 21 assists in the loss to SHA (8-1).

MILFORD — It has been about one week since Foran volleyball coach Julie Johnson decided to make changes to her team’s lineup. Wednesday night against cross-town rival Jonathan law, Johnson made one more move that proved to pay immediate dividends.

Trying to utilize the speed of Dani Kemp, Johnson used the sophomore the entire contest as the team’s libero. Johnson’s move proved to be correct.

Behind 18 digs from Kemp, 37 assists, nine digs and four aces from Rebekah DeRosa and exceptional hitting, the Lions defeated Law 3-0 on Spike Out Leukemia Night at Jonathan Law. The scores of the match were 25-21, 25-18 and 25-21.

WEST HAVEN — When the Notre Dame and West Haven boys’ soccer teams square off, the contest is usually a defensive battle. So it came as a bit of a surprise when three goals were scored in a span of 6 minutes of the opening half.

When all was said and done, Notre Dame had a little too much offense for the Westies and posted a 4-1 victory at Veterans Stadium in West Haven Wednesday afternoon.

We are at approximately the midway point of the soccer season and the picture is starting to get a little clearer in the Southern Connecticut Conference.

Hand can make its claim as the best team in the league after beating Fairfield Prep 1-0 at home Monday, then blitzing Guilford 5-1. The Tigers are certainly the best team in the SCC Hammonasset.

Cheshire has taken a step back from last season, making the SCC Housatonic very tough to call at this point. Shelton is the only unbeaten team in the division. Amity lost to the Gaels, but not to anyone else and looks to be the most improved team in the league. Cheshire and Sheehan make this a four-team race.

Prep bounced back off its first loss by handing Xavier its first loss. The SCC Quinnipiac will be decided between these two teams.

Branford is the only undefeated team in the Oronoque Division after beating North Haven Wednesday. Those two teams willd ecide this division as well.

In girls play, Hand won round one over Guilford last Saturday. Still, it will come down to the two teams' next matchup that decides the SCC Hammonasset Division.

The trio of Cheshire and Shelton played to a scoreless tie last Saturday and both beat Amity already in the SCC Housatonic. Still too close to call.

So is the SCC Quinnipiac with Mercy, SHA and Hamden all jockeying for the crown.

And guess who is the only unbeaten team in the Oronoque? If you guessed East Haven at 2-0, you win. The Easties shut out North Haven (which then beat Shelton 3-0 Wednesday) and beat Wilbur Cross. Still, North Haven is the best team in this division. Whether the Indians win it or not is another story.

And kudos to Law for winning at Mercy 1-0 on Wednesday. That's might be the biggest win in the program in a decade.

The SCC tournament begins on Oct. 29.

Ansonia 3, Crosby 1: Morgan Westine had 20 assists and three aces, Alexia Steeves added eight kills, three aces and two blocks and Shaylah Dobson had 10 kills as the Chargers downed the Bulldogs.
Iesha Matos finished with 10 digs, 10 kills and five assists and Livia Shehy added nine digs, five kills and three blocks for Crosby (1-6) in the loss to Ansonia (3-5).
East Hampton 3, Hale-Ray 0: Dakota Reed had 18 assists and seven digs and Shayla Belanger added 10 digs and five aces for East Hampton.
For Hale-Ray (2-5), Eliza Burke had seven digs and a block and Sabrina Brainard added two kills in the loss to East Hampton (7-1).
Stratford 3, New Milford 0: Haley Dunning had three aces and one kill, Emily Eckel added 11 service points, five aces and 10 kills and Gabe Rooney finished with 20 assists as the Red Devils won in New Milford.

MILFORD — It’s always easier to go through a week of football practice after a victory. When it’s your first win in more than a year, it’s even better.

So you can imagine things were quite upbeat for the Law football team this past week, coming off a 28-12 win over Wilbur Cross that earned the Lawmen Register Team of the Week laurels following a vote at nhregister.com.

“Last year I was also a captain,” senior George Knoth said. “To be the face of team that was 0-10, the laughing stock of the whole conference, was kind of embarrassing. To come in this week having won, one of my teachers put a (congratulatory) note on my locker. And to have everyone patting you on the back saying, ‘We can’t wait for the next game,’ we haven’t had that around here for a while.”
