Field Hockey: Season debut features local teams in 2011 CIAC finals

The 2012 scholastic field hockey season kicks off today with defending CIAC Class L champion Cheshire facing SCC rival Guilford tonight at 7 and CIAC Class S runner-up Lauralton Hall at SWC rival Pomperaug at 5:30 p.m.

The big question for the Rams is can they replace All-American and Register All-Area field hockey MVP Maria Blois in goal? Blois is playing at Quinnipiac University this season.
The Rams have two goalies this season - senior Lauren Fountain and junior Maddy Levy. Fountain will start today. Rams coach Eileen Dunham said Levy has a sprained wrist and a MRI on Wednesday will determine when she can play.
On the field the Rams are still strong with forwards Emma Farrel (22 goals, 22 assists last season) and Miranda Garcia, midfielder Michelle Federico and defenders Emily Hague and Linda Bonitz.
The Rams face a senior-laden Guilford team led by high-scoring Riley Smith and goalie Nicole Snow. The Indians also have veteran coach Kitty Palmer.

Lauralton Hall has most of its team back including goalie Caitlin Bennett who had 14 shutouts in 2011. The on-field defense is led by Jessica Napolitano (the coach’s daughter) and Micaela Murphy, midfield is led by Mary Kate Fornshell and Elizabeth Lamonte and the top forwards include Caitlin Nevins, Maureen Connelly and Victoria Stapleton.
