RAY CURREN: Bloodied, but not broken, UConn-bound Matt Walsh helps lead Hand into Class L final

By Ray Curren
Elm City Sports Columnist

WEST HAVEN — On just the second play from scrimmage in Sunday night’s Class L semifinal, as he’s done countless times in his Daniel Hand football career, Matt Walsh laid a big hit on an opponent — in this case, Masuk quarterback Malik Cummings.

Walsh’s helmet went flying (far enough that in the fog at Ken Strong Stadium, there were a few cries of “Ball!” from the Hand sideline, meaning that they thought Walsh’s rogue headgear was a fumbled football), and he took a couple of steps toward the sideline before dropping to one knee.

Even though it was hard to see exactly what the problem was, longtime Hand trainer Terri Ajaski knew immediately something was wrong.
