Five Area Teams Head Home

In the opening round of the girls' basketball tournament tonight, Southington edged Cheshire 49-47 in Class LL action. In Class M play, North Branford fell 34-18 to St. Bernard, Tolland knocked off Foran 45-38, Berlin coasted past Sheehan 64-35 and Montville topped Law 57-42.
Class LL winners
Chantell Alford scored 24 points to lead Wilbur Cross to a 71-38 win over Newington.
Bianca Simmons and Rachel Roberts combined for 41 points as Mercy doubled Westhill 72-36. The Tigers face Symone Roberts and New Britain in the second round of the Class LL play Thursday at New Britain (7 p.m.).
Hamden knocked off Hall 60-47. The Green Dragons outscored their opponents 24-9 in the final quarter.
Class M winners
Shelby Van Huysen scored 15 points to lead Haddam-Killingworth, the Shoreline Confernece champions, to a 60-48 win over Woodland. Morgan also beat Stonington 51-37.
