Abbate, Ferrante, Lundberg win State Open Wrestling titles

Xavier's Tom Abbate defeated New Fairfield's Jesse Broderick to win the title at 140. Abbate also won the Class LL title and finished second at the SCC meet.

Shelton's Rob Ferrante became the first wrestler in school history to win a State Open championship. Ferrante defeated Killingly's Brandon Thuotte at 125.

At 160, Guilford's Kyle Lundberg defeated Southington's Mike Monson. Lundberg also won the Class M and SCC title this season.

Five other area wrestlers advanced to the final before losing. They were:

103: Rob Lonergan (Law)
112: Jed Cervero (Cheshire)
130: Tom Ayala (East Haven)
152: Brian Onofrio (Hand)
215: Pat Gillen (Shelton)

The top four in each weight class advance to this week's New England championships, which will be held at the New Haven Athletic Center.

Advancing were:
145: Ryan Scott (Xavier), fourth
152: Alex Carpenter (Amity), fourth
189: Tito Slaughter (New Haven), fourth
285: Pat Plumb (Seymour), third
