BOYS' HOCKEY: Amity to host fundraiser for fire victims

The Martino family of Orange needs help and the Amity boys’ hockey team is pitching in with a fundraiser.
The Spartans will be hosting a fundraiser at its SCC interdivision game with Cheshire on Thursday at the Bennett Rink at 6:30 p.m. to benefit the family of former Spartans player Eddie Martino of Orange whose family lost their home and belongings in a fire on Jan. 20.
Martino was a forward with the Spartans boys’ hockey team and graduated in 1984.
“Eddie Martino was a talented, hard-working forward for Amity when he played,” Amity coach Gary Lindgren said. “He had a lot of speed and was a very intense, physical player.”
According to Lindgren a fire started in the middle of the night and the cause is still to be determined.
Raffle tickets with proceeds going to the family will be sold during the game.
Donations can also be sent to The Amity Hockey Parent’s Association, 25 Newton Rd., Woodbridge, CT., 06525 and put it to the attention of Gary Lindgren.

Boys' Hockey: North Branford joins the SCC

southernconnecticutconference.org

Since the Southern Connecticut Conference had only 15 boys' hockey teams the last two seasons, commissioner Al Carbone has been looking for another team to make it an even 16.
Carbone added that team on Thursday when North Branford agreed to join boys' hockey in the SCC.
"Ever since we lost Derby a couple years ago to the NVL we've been looking for a replacement and North Branford was one of the teams we reached out to," Carbone said. "We've had ongoing discussions for a couple years now at the coach's level about associate membership for hockey and the timing is right to make the addition a perfect fit.
"Another reason this makes sense is North Branford already plays a number of our SCC teams in the regular season plus five of our SCC teams call the same rink home as North Branford (Northford Ice Pavilion)."
From a numbers angle, there is a big reason the addition of North Branford to the SCC makes a right fit. On Wednesday, the CIAC boys' hockey committee agreed to allow the Amity to move from Division I to II for next season and Lyman Hall moves from Division II to III.
"With Amity moving to Division II and Lyman Hall to Division III, the addition of North Branford gives us eight Division II/III teams and eight Division I teams," Carbone said. "This makes sense for everyone. North Branford will also be eligible for our SCC Division II tournament next season as well."
Carbone also added North Branford's move to the SCC is only for boys' hockey at this time. Although nothing is planned now, Carbone did not rule out future discussions to add other sports as well.

Boys' hockey: Amity's Corey Shea reaches milestone

Amity forward Corey Shea recently scored his 100th career point for the Spartans.
Shea had three goals and three assists against SCC foe West Haven on Jan. 29 to reach the milestone.
"I am just so happy and proud of that kid," Amity coach Gary Lindgren said. "He works so hard and he's such a solid hockey player. And wow, what a way to do it, with three goals and three assists in one game."
Shea had 20 points as a sophomore, 61 as a junior and has 34 as a senior for 115 points overall...and counting.
