On Wednesday, according to CIAC spokesman Joe Tonelli, the CIAC girls lacrosse tournament will go from a D-I/D-II format this season to a Class format in 2011 with Class L, M and S tournaments.
"We finally have enough girls teams to go to the larger format," Tonelli said. "It’s something we always wanted to do."
There are 76 girls teams this season with five state-wide teams in their first season as a varsity team. Tonelli said the number will increase to 77 in 2011.

New Canaan posted a cumulative stroke total of 298 to win the Division II golf championship by 14 shots over Avon at Fairview Farm GC in Harwinton. Brian Tohir of New Canaan earned medalist laurels with a 2-under-par 70.
Behind Mike Berestecky's 76, Hand finished fourth (319), one stroke better than Guilford. Ryan Moore and Kevin Ricker shot 74 and 76, respectively, for Guilford.

In the girls' State Open tennis final at Yale University, Kimmy Guerin of Weston beat Westhill's Vanessa Petrini 6-3, 6-3 to claim the singles title while Marie Gargiulo and Emma Samson of Weston defeated Kimberly Glerum and Alyssa Baker of New Canaan 6-3 7-6(7-5) to win the doubles title.

The boys' tennis class championships were postponed to Thursday and are now at Yale rather than Conard. Two area singles players, Fairfield Prep's Tom O'Brien in Class LL and Branford's Luka Bagi in Class M, are playing for singles titles, while there is an all-area doubles final in Class M: Alejandro Lluberes and Kyle Gaboury of Guilford vs. Nick Vonderheyde and Chris Ettore of Law.

Only one New Haven area team is alive in the CIAC girls lacrosse tournament as No. 5 Haddam-Killingworth defeated No. 13 Pomperaug 13-9 in the Division II quarterfinals on Monday.
HK (14-4) , led by offensive standout Emily Anderson and goalie Teagan Ferguson, will face No. 8 Fairfield Ludlowe (14-5) in the semifinals on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Bunnell High in Stratford.
HK is on the verge of joining some rare company if it can advance to the final on Saturday at Bunnell (time to be announced).
Since the CIAC started sanctioning the girls' state tournament in 2004 only one New Haven area team has advanced as far as the championship in any division. Amity advanced to the D-II final in 2006 and lost 7-3 to East Lyme.

Looking good in the 'ol lacrosse neighborhood....

In the boys’ Division I tournament, entering the post season I predicted a Cheshire-Fairfield Prep CIAC Class L final and so far both teams are making me look good.
No. 2 Cheshire (19-2) faces No. 3 Glastonbury (14-4) in one semifinal on Tuesday at West Haven High at 7:15 p.m. Glastonbury will likely have some revenge as motivation. Cheshire defeated Glastonbury 8-4 in a regular-season game on April 10 and the Rams also defeated the Tomahawks 11-10 in the 2002 Division I championship.
The problem for opponents is Cheshire has a huge amount of depth with 8-9 players who can score. The Rams have arguably one of the best all-around players in the state with scoring phenom Todd Heritage and goalie Nate Gaudio is extremely tough to beat.

In the other semifinal, the No. 4 Jesuits (16-5) face No. 1 Staples (18-1) on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. at McMahon High.

Four-time Class L defending champion Fairfield Prep is still the team to beat with its own brand of depth front to back led by Griff McGoldrick, Brendan Rotanz, Mike Carey, Darric White and Alex Matarazzo. The Jesuits have the toughest overall schedule in the state and the elite out-of-state games have been serving them well in the postseason. Staples has its share of balanced scoring and a solid goalie with Austin Waiter.

Three state golf championships will be decided on Monday. The Division I championship will be held at Crestbrook Park in Watertown. Fairfield Prep and Cheshire, the Southern Connecticut Conference co-champions are among the teams in contention for the team title.

The Division III title will be contested at Tallwood CC in Hebron and the Division IV crown will be contested at the Timberlin Golf Club in Kensington.

Guilford is one of the favorites to win the Division II title on Wednesday at Fairview Farms in Harwinton.

The state girls golf championship will be held Tuesday at Orange Hills Country Club. Lauralton Hall is among the teams in contention for the team title.

In tennis, the boys class divisions and the State Open for girls resume on Monday. The finals for all four boys' divisions will be held Wednesday at Conard at 4 p.m. while Yale hosts the girls' Open finalists Wednesday at 3 p.m.

The Newtown at Cheshire CIAC Class L boys' lacrosse quarterfinal game has been moved to 6 p.m. on Saturday (June 5). Cheshire (18-2) is seeded No. 2 and Newtown (12-5) is No. 7. For more info go to the CIAC website listed above.

Both of Tuesday's outdoor track meets have been postponed due to the inclement weather forecast.

The Class LL meet will now be Thursday at 2:30 at Manchester HS.

The Class MM meet will now be Friday at 2:30 at Manchester HS.
