New Canaan wins Division II golf crown
New Canaan posted a cumulative stroke total of 298 to win the Division II golf championship by 14 shots over Avon at Fairview Farm GC in Harwinton. Brian Tohir of New Canaan earned medalist laurels with a 2-under-par 70.
Behind Mike Berestecky's 76, Hand finished fourth (319), one stroke better than Guilford. Ryan Moore and Kevin Ricker shot 74 and 76, respectively, for Guilford.
In the girls' State Open tennis final at Yale University, Kimmy Guerin of Weston beat Westhill's Vanessa Petrini 6-3, 6-3 to claim the singles title while Marie Gargiulo and Emma Samson of Weston defeated Kimberly Glerum and Alyssa Baker of New Canaan 6-3 7-6(7-5) to win the doubles title.
The boys' tennis class championships were postponed to Thursday and are now at Yale rather than Conard. Two area singles players, Fairfield Prep's Tom O'Brien in Class LL and Branford's Luka Bagi in Class M, are playing for singles titles, while there is an all-area doubles final in Class M: Alejandro Lluberes and Kyle Gaboury of Guilford vs. Nick Vonderheyde and Chris Ettore of Law.
