SOFTBALL: Scholar athletes step into the spotlight at annual classic

WEST HAVEN — The fifth annual Scholar Athlete Classic softball game took place Saturday night at Biondi Field in West Haven. While there are numerous All-Star games, none are quite like this one run by chairman and game creator Nick Aprea.

The game is intended to honor players not only for their performances on the field, but also for characteristics off the diamond. Saturday’s contest also honored the players for their character, work in the classroom and work in the community.

“This has grown tremendously since the first year,” Aprea said. “We actually had 13 more schools participating this year and five have players in the game.

CLASS M SOFTBALL: Law's season ends with quarterfinal loss to No. 4 Rocky Hill

ROCKY HILL — Rocky Hill pitcher Megan Ruonavaara entered Friday afternoon’s quarterfinal match against Jonathan Law with a reputation of throwing the ball by opposing teams. Ruonavaara proved she is more than just a pitcher.

Driving in all three runs with a double in the first and a single in the fifth, Ruonavaara led her team to a 3-2 CIAC Class M quarterfinal victory over Law at Rocky Hill.

Ruonavaara did not fool Law from the pitching circle, allowing seven hits and striking out four, but Law could not get a clutch hit in key situations.
