ANSONIA — Expectations weren’t high for the Ansonia softball team to start this season, especially with the graduation of last year’s starting pitcher, Jessica Mooney.

“We’re known as a football town. Girls sports have struggled in the past,” Chargers coach Lindsey Wheeler said. “Since we graduated a pitcher, everybody thought we were down in the dumps.”

That outlook didn’t change a whole lot the first few games of the season, until a freshman emerged as Ansonia’s ace. Samantha Belenchia came on in relief against Derby on April 9 and has been the Chargers’ top starter ever since.
