Fifteen SCC schools are scheduled to participate in the competition in four different categories – 14-under squad size, 15-over squad size, novice and co-ed.

Schools scheduled to compete include Branford (co-ed), Career (novice), Cheshire (15-over), East Haven (15-over), Foran (15-over), Hamden (14-under), Hillhouse (14-under), Jonathan Law (15-over), Lyman Hall (15-over), Mercy (15-over), North Haven (15-over), Sacred Heart Academy (15-over), Sheehan (15-over), Shelton (co-ed), West Haven (14-under and novice).

“The cheerleading competition has become an exciting event for the Southern Connecticut Conference,” explained Commissioner Al Carbone. “More importantly, we have been able to modify and improve the competition to make it a positive experience for all of our student athletes.”

Shelton is the defending 15-over champion, while West Haven captured the 14-under title last year. Branford is the defending co-ed division champion and Career was the 2010 novice champion.

The event sponsors for the 2011 SCC cheerleading competition are Planet Stunt and AllStar Cheer Bowtique.

Studley steps down at St. Joseph

Bob Studley has stepped down as St. Joseph baseball coach after nine seasons.

Studley won 110 games in his nine seasons at the helm for the Cadets. The Cadets made four FCIAC postseason tournaments and reached the Class M state tournament every year but 2004 under Studley. St. Joseph played for the FCIAC Championship in 2007 and advanced to the Class M quarterfinals three times, including each of the last two years. Twenty-two of his former players went on to play in college and one current senior (Chris McCormack) has already committed to play at Wheaton College next year.

The 39-year-old Studley continues to work at the school as a math teacher and was named Math Department Chairperson prior to this school year.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to coach at my alma mater," said Studley in a press release. "No one takes more pride in St. Joe’s baseball, and I hope that rubbed off on the players. The program remains in great shape, the 2011 team will hopefully contend for FCIAC and state titles, and I’ll be rooting for them. I love coaching high school baseball and hope to continue to coach in the future, but, regretfully, not at St. Joe’s this year."

Boys' hockey: South Windsor top northern team

Since losses to Fairfield Prep and Glastonbury, No. 6 South Windsor (9-2) has reeled off eight straight wins to emerge as the hottest team in northern Connecticut. This includes a 4-3 win over No. 9 Glastonbury, avenging a 3-1 loss to the Tomahawks on Dec. 22.
South Windsor coach Neil Rodman isn’t surprised by the big turnaround.
"I expect us to compete in each and every game," Rodman said. "The past few weeks, even though we have come out with some wins, we have not played our best hockey in all of those wins. Despite that, our strength is that we get a total team effort from the goal out in every game.
"The thing is I can’t really say that we have one or two top players. Lately it has been game to game with who is playing well. I can’t wait for the game that they all play well on the same night."
The Bobcats are led by a pair of talented alternating goalies Ryan Serksnas and Christian Marchi and speedy forward Joe Bonnizelli is among the top offensive players.
"Postseason wise, I see our team as a middle level Division I Team," Rodman said. "My goal for the rest of the season is to have our guys keep working to improve. We played Prep the second game of the season, and they totally dominated the game. If we continue to work hard and improve on the ice, and most importantly in the locker room, we can be competitive in the (CIAC Division I) state tournament and win our first round game and see what comes next.
"Hopefully we can be at our best when the post season arrives. We have more work to do as a team before we can be competitive with the best Division I teams like, Hamden, Fairfield Prep, New Cannaan, West Haven, and Notre Dame (West Haven)."

Boys' hockey on Tuesday: No. 1 Hamden vs. No. 2 New Canaan

New Canaan lost defenseman Bo McGuinness and forward Kris Nugent to graduation but the Rams haven’t missed a beat this season with an 8-0 record and impressive wins over Xavier, Notre Dame-West Haven and St. Joseph.
It’s No. 1 vs. No. 2 as the No. 2 Rams get a big test on Tuesday at No. 1 Hamden at 6:30 p.m. as they face two-time defending Division I champion Green Dragons at Astorino Rink. Of course it all depends on whether the impending winter storm headed our way postpones the game. Get weather updates on this high school sports blog and www.nhregister.com/sports.
The Rams and their depth have been dominating opponents on both ends of the ice, so much so that Darien coach Larry Vieira believes they won’t lose a game this season.
New Canaan is led on offense by forwards Jimmy Jo Granito, Charlie Corcoran, Henry Corcoran, Dylan Hart and Reed Harper. The defense is led by goalie Tim Nowacki and defensemen Tom Krieger, Brian Tohir, Ryan Begoon and offensive-minded David Russell.
The Green Dragons (3-2) hope to rebound from a 4-3 loss to SCC foe Xavier on Tuesday (Jan. 11). The Green Dragons have balanced scoring led by forwards Jim Burt, C.J. Carignan, Paul Amarone, Nick Amarone, Justin MacGregor and Pat Lynch. The defense is led by R.J. Ugolik, Brandon Dadio, Teddy Kennedy, Sean O’Keefe and Michael Lee. Matt Hoff and Andy Varga have been alternating in goal.
This should be one of the most exciting games of the season. Veteran New Canaan coach Bo Hickey will have his team ready and seasoned Hamden coach Bill Verneris will have his team firing on all cylinders at home.
