AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL: O'Keefe, Zanghi lead Milford past Oxford in play-in tournament

Brian O'Keefe pitched a complete game and Joe Zanghi had a triple, home run and three RBIs to lead the Milford Post 196 baseball team to a 5-2 victory over Oxford in the play-in portion of the American Legion state tournament.

East Haven's Rea to play soccer at Stony Brook

Megan Rea of East Haven recently signed her National Letter of Intent to play soccer for Stony Brook University.
During her four years at East Haven, Rea’s accomplishments were: 4 year All Division, 2 years All State (first female soccer player to be named All State in the school's history), 2010 recipient of the John “Whitey” Piurek Award for Outstanding Female Soccer Player of the Year, and co-captain her senior year.
Her other accomplishments on the soccer field are: selected to the South Central Premier Team U10-U17, Soccer Plus Premier U18, CT Olympic Development Program for 7 years, 4 years on the Region 1 Olympic Development Team.

CYCLING: Local coaches gear up for three-day trek from Boston to New York for Lou Gehrig's Disease fundraiser

This weekend will represent the culmination of months of hard work — both physically and emotionally — for local high school coaches Dave Festa, Brian DePodesta, and Nate Hill.

The three Hamden natives will participate in the ninth annual Tri-State Trek, which raises money and awareness for ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), the neurodegenerative disease that affects more than 5,000 Americans each year.

AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL: Carrano lifts West Haven past North Haven, keeps playoff hopes alive

WEST HAVEN — With the postseason on the line for both the North Haven and West Haven American Legion baseball teams, a playoff feel was in the air at Piurek Field Tuesday night.

After suffering a gut-wrenching loss the night before, West Haven turned to John Carrano to right the ship.

Carrano did just that, tossing a complete game two-hitter in a 4-1 West Haven victory. Carrano was in control from start to finish, throwing 86 pitches, walking two and striking out one.

Boys' Lacrosse: Shelton earns Sportsmanship Award

The Shelton boys' lacrosse team and Shelton head coach Steve Kennedy recently received the 2011 Sportsmanship Award from the Connecticut Lacrosse Officials Association.
John Matthews, president of the Connecticut Lacrosse Officials Association, presented the award to Kennedy at the 51st annual CLOA banquet on June 15 in Southington.
The officials that officated all high school and prep school lacrosse games for the 2011 season make the selection for the coach/team sportsmanship award.
According to a press release, Matthews stated at the banquet the award for the Shelton team was almost a unanimous decision by the officials.
"We officials look at the teams and how they represent themselves during the course of a contest," Matthews said. Matthews also stated that the Connecticut Lacrosse Officials Association acknowledged that the Shelton boy's lacrosse team has improved not just in playing the game but by the respect that they showed their opponents.

HOCKEY: West Haven's Eric Boguniecki named assistant coach of Bridgeport Sound Tigers

The New York Islanders announced today that West Haven native Eric Boguniecki has been named assistant coach of their American Hockey League affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL: Lyddy, Milford dominate West Haven Post 71

MILFORD — Coming off a split of Saturday’s doubleheader, both the Milford and West Haven American Legion baseball teams were looking to gain an edge in Sunday morning’s rubber game.

West Haven needed a split of its final six games to qualify for the postseason and faced a tough lefty in Tucker Lyddy.

Post 71 got a good luck at the lefty as Lyddy dominated early and rolled to an 11-0 victory at Jonathan Law. Lyddy took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before finishing with a two-hitter.

Hamden Rotary Club honors student athletes

The Hamden Rotary Club recently honored a member of each athletic team at Hamden High School.  The honoree was selected by members of his/her team as the best representative of good sportsmanship among the group. This criteria is in line with the Rotary Club's motto of Service Above Self. 

The banquet and award ceremony have been celebrated for many years and organized by Reverend Owen Sanderson. 
Jean Cooper from Hamden High School helped to plan this year's event as well.

Coaches were present to tell the audience about the generous traits displayed by the athletes.

AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL: Orange salvages final game of series with North Haven, keeps playoff hopes alive

The Orange Post 127 American Legion baseball team avoided a sweep with a 7-5 victory over North Haven Thursday night in the final game of a three-game series. Orange also kept its postseason hopes alive and needs to win seven of its final 10 games to qualify for the upcoming state tournament.
