Hand preps for Class L wrestling
Hand is one of the favorites, along with New Milford and host Bristol Eastern, heading into the Class L state championship wrestling meet, which begins Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Bristol Eastern High. Championship finals are scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m. at the same site.
Senior Ed Carroll won the Class L title at 125 pounds last season, and placed second at the State Open. Carroll is 31-1 and the top seed at 130 pounds this year.
"The guys are a bit stronger (at 130)," Carroll said. "But I've wrestled-up during the summer at 135, 140. I got used to it. They're just faster, more explosive. It took a little getting used to."
Carroll, freshman Will Crisco (103), junior Tucker MacGregor (125), sophomore Jake Savoca (135) and junior Joe Demichele (285), who is 31-0 this season, all won SCC titles at last week's meet. Fellow captain, senior Welles Sakmar, is 24-4 and seeded fourth at 140.
Hand, however, placed second behind Xavier at the SCC meet. The Tigers were seeking their fourth straight title.
Sakmar, who moved to Connecticut from Pennsylvania, and comes from a family of wrestlers, believes wrestling on the Polson Middle School team prepared him, and his fellow teammates, when entering high school.
"It actually prepares you a lot," Sakmar said. "It teaches you all the fundamentals. It gets you ready, so when you get to high school, you're prepared for the cycle of high school wrestling."
