In the boys’ tournament, Darien has won five straight titles (Division I in 2005, Class M the last four seasons), Prep has won Class L the last four seasons and St. Joseph is the defending champion in Class S.

In the SCC, seedings virtually held to form in boys' lacrosse as No. 1 Cheshire, No. 2 Fairfield Prep and No. 3 Guilford all advanced. Only No. 4 Xavier lost, to No. 5 Hand 10-9 in overtime. The semifinals are Wednesday in Branford - Fairfield Prep against Guilford at 5 p.m., followed by Cheshire against Hand at 7.
All the top four seeds (No. 1 Hand, No. 2 Cheshire, No. 3 Guilford and No. 4 Hamden) advanced to Wednesday's semifinals at Hamden: Hand vs. Hamden and Cheshire vs. Guilford.

In boys' tennis, No. 6 Guilford upended No. 3 Hand and now faces No. 2 Cheshire today at Yale University in the semifinals. Fairfield Prep, the top seed, takes on No. 5 Amity
In girls' tennis, all of the top four seeds survived to today's semis also at Yale. Top-seeded and two-time defending champion Hand faces North Haven while Housy Division rivals Amity and Cheshire meet once again.
The finals for both is scheduled for Wednesday at Yale.

The championship for boys' and girls' track is today at Sheehan beginning at 1 p.m. - the same time the top golfers in the SCC tee off at Brooklawn Country Club for that league crown. SCC boys' volleyball semifinals are tonight, with the final scheduled for Amity Thursday night at 7.

games on as scheduled

While most of Tuesday's action was postponed due to inclement weather, today's slate of games is on as it gets closer to the end of the regular season.

Included in our coverage today is the Fairchester League baseball championship between third-seeded Hopkins and fourth-seeded Brunswick at Hopkins at 4:30 p.m. Also, Newtown plays at Lauralton Hall in a key Register Top-10 matchup between the two South-West Conference rivals.

Among Tuesday's highlights included Cheshire edging Fairfield Prep 9-8 in boys' lacrosse to help the Rams clinch the Southern Connecticut Conference Division I title.

Boys' lacrosse: Cheshire off the schneid against Prep

http://www.casciac.org
Wow....
It's only a regular-season win, but the Cheshire boys' lacrosse team certainly sent a message on Tuesday with it's 9-8 SCC win at Fairfield Prep.
The big thorn in the Rams’ side the last four seasons has been Southern Connecticut Conference foe Fairfield Prep. Entering Tuesday's game, in their last 10 matchups the Rams were 0-10 against the Jesuits, including a loss in the SCC tournament final last season and first round of the CIAC Class L tournament the last two seasons.
As deep and talented as the Rams are this season with 17 returning players from a year ago, the players and coaches know any postseason success in 2010 likely means getting by the four-time defending Class L champion and four-time defending SCC tournament champion Jesuits.
The 0-10 mark has clearly been on the minds of the Rams, especially seniors like Todd Heritage, Nick Carisio and goalie Nate Gaudio.
The loss was the first in the state for the Jesuits who are 12-3 with their only other losses to out-of-state national powers Chaminade (N.Y.) and St. Anthony's (N.Y.). The Rams are 14-1 with their only loss to Lynnbrook (N.Y.).
Certainly the real season doesn't begin until two weeks with the Class L tournament that begins on June 1. And the Jesuits aren't going to lose any sleep over this regular-season loss to the Rams.
But I am looking forward to the potential postseason matchups between these two teams. The Rams and Jesuits will likely meet two more times and you can expect no prisoners to be taken by either team in both matchups. In my opinion, because of the heated rivalry between the two teams, I believe the only team in this state that can derail the Jesuits from winning five straight Class L and SCC titles are the Rams.
The SCC tournament begins on Monday with quarterfinal games and Cheshire now becomes the No. 1 seed with Fairfield Prep No. 2. Both should meet in the championship game on May 28 at Branford High at 7 p.m.
With due respect to the other teams in Class L, hopefully the tournament seedings will have the Rams and Jesuits in different brackets with the potential for a final 2010 matchup in the Class L championship game.
That would be a game for the ages....

most games on as scheduled

Most of the area baseball and softball games in the SCC are on for today despite inclement weather in the morning.

All baseball, softball, girls' tennis and boys' volleyball teams have to have all games completed by May 27. But in the SCC, teams are going to have even less time to complete games since the SCC league playoffs begin May 24 or 25.

Rain is in the forecast for next Tuesday and Wednesday, which may mean the league playoffs in certain sports will need to be pushed back in order to complete the regular season.

Time will tell...

Girls' lacrosse: Thunderbirds on a hot streak

http://casciac.org/
It's amazing what a team can do when it enjoys double-digit scoring against opponents.
Thanks to double-digit scoring, the North Branford girls' lacrosse team has been one of the hottest teams in the Shoreline Conference the past three weeks.
The Thunderbirds head into today's game with Morgan on a six-game win streak.
One reason for the streak has been a balanced scoring attack. The T-Birds have outscored opponents 75-46 in the last six games.
North Branford's offense is led by Kirsten Kilburn (42 points), Sara Robertson (38 points), Kelsey Platner (31 points) and Kelly Martin (12 points).

SCC Quinnipiac golf gearing up

Today, Notre Dame-West Haven, led by ace Brian Engstrom, hosts Hamden in a key SCC Quinnipiac Division matchup at Race Brook CC at 2:45 p.m.

On Tuesday, Geoff Vartelas and Xavier, make the trek down to Fairfield to face Fairfield Prep at Brooklawn CC. Expect Vartelas and the rest to use this as a tuneup for the SCC championship meet, which will be held at Brooklawn on May 25.

Girls' lacrosse: Eddy back on track

In the beginning of this season, Cheshire girl's lacrosse standout Katharine Eddy played a bit tentative coming off of nine months of rehab for an ACL injury at the end of the 2009 lacrosse season. But the scoring phenom has given notice she is back with 12 goals in her last two games.

She had six goals in a 10-7 win over SCC rival Hamden on Thursday and six goals in an 18-7 non-league win over Southington on Saturday.

Girls' lacrosse: One streak extended, two streaks broken

http://www.casciac.org/
One of the most successful girls' lacrosse teams in the area lately has been Southern Connecticut Conference power Cheshire. Heading into Saturday's game with Southington, the Rams had won five games in a row and eight of their last nine. This includes wins over SCC foes Guilford (18-10 win), Branford (13-4), Amity (19-4) and Hamden (10-7).

Mercy snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 13-6 SCC win over Shelton on Thursday.

The Hamden girls had a three-game win streak snapped by SCC foe Cheshire on Thursday (10-7 loss to Cheshire).

Fairfield Prep, Hand tops in SCC

The two preseason tennis favorites in the Southern Connecticut Conference took another step forward against Amity Friday.
Fairfield Prep beat Amity for the second time this season, this time sweeping the Spartans 7-0. Tom O'Brien, Ryan Carr and Jason Ottomano, Prep's top three singles players, are all among the league's best.
The Hand girls beat Amity 6-1 for the second time this year. Alex Petrini, Hand's top singles player, has not lost yet this season. Taylor Fay and Kristen Doerer round out a very sound top three for the Tigers.
Don't expect anything to change when the SCC tournament commences in a few weeks: Prep and Hand will likely be the teams left standing in the finals at Yale University on May 26.

Ice hockey: ND's Curadi commits to RPI

Former Notre Dame of West Haven multi-sport athlete Luke Curadi (2009 graduate), who resides in Cheshire, signed a National Letter of Intent to play hockey at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Monday morning.
Curadi will actually spend next hockey season playing for the DuBuque Fighting Saints in the United States Hockey League before enrolling at RPI in the Fall of 2011 in time for the 2011-2012 season.
Curadi played varsity hockey his first three years at Notre Dame. He also played football and track as a freshman and lacrosse as a sophomore before devoting himself full-time to hockey.

During his senior year, Curadi played for the Hartford Junior Wolf Pack before going to the British Columbia Hockey League last season. As a member of the Penticton Vees, Curadi played in 58 of the teams’ 60 games and scored seven goals and added 10 assists as a defenseman. Penticton finished second in its division with a 48-8 record. They were eliminated in the semifinal round of the league playoffs.
