Shelton wins first SCC golf title

Shelton won its first SCC golf championship Tuesday by 15 shots over Amity at Race Brook Country Club.
James Tate of Shelton was the medalist with a 76. You may remember James Tate from earlier this month - he was the one who was not allowed to attend the prom because he taped giant cardboard letters to the front brick wall of the high school asking his date to the prom.

The story gained national attention and you know the rest of the story. In case you don't, check it out here

Girls' lacrosse: State players among UMass recruits

Recently, first-year UMass head coach Angela McMahon announced the signing of 10 newcomers to National Letters of Intent for the 2012 season. The class includes six midfielders, two attacks, one defender and one goalie.
"The 2012 freshman class is one of the strongest groups we have had in program history. They will add incredible depth to our midfield and outstanding talent in goal," said McMahon.
While none of the players are from the New Haven area, there are three from Connecticut and they could have an impact on local teams in the current Class L and M tournaments.
Among the signees are Ellie Bullitt of Darien, Lauren Freeland of New Canaan and Morgan Walker of Glastonbury.
If Hand advances to the CIAC Class M final on June 11, the Tigers would likely face Bullitt’s Blue Wave or Freeland’s Rams. If things break right for Cheshire in Class L and the Rams get to the final, there is the potential they could face Walker’s Tomahawks.
Other members of UMass’ incoming class are Jessica Daut (Pleasanton, Calif.), Cassie Raglan (Peterborough, Ontario), Mia Rapolla (Gorham, Maine), Erin Riley (West Nyack, N.Y.), Meredith Swagart (Washington, D.C.), Amy Tiernan (Deferiet, N.Y.), and Rachel Vallarelli (Hartsdale, N.Y.).

Lacrosse: Boys' and girls' CIAC pairings released

The CIAC released its boys’ and girls’ lacrosse pairings this morning and while the final girls’ seedings gave favorable placements to No. 2 Hand in Class M and No. 2 Cheshire in Class L, the scheduling gods weren’t so kind to the defending Class L champion Cheshire boys.
The Cheshire boys team will face Fairfield Prep today in the SCC tournament championship at Branford at 3 p.m. The Rams, 8-8 in the regular season, drew the No. 17 seed and will have to play at Danbury in a qualifying round game on Saturday at noon. Win that game and the Rams advance to the first round where it will face host and No. 1 seed Newtown.
Ouch.
While the Rams have been playing its best lacrosse of the season lately and have the talent to win those games, playing back-to-back games is a very tough way to start a tournament.
Fairfield Prep drew the No. 4 seed and will host the Southington-Westhill qualifying round winner on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. Other top teams in L are No. 2 Staples, No. 5 Glastonbury, No. 12 Greenwich and No. 8 Simsbury
No. 1 seed Darien, which is also ranked No. 1 in the Register Top 10 poll, should take no prisoners in Class M for its seventh straight championship. No. 16 Notre Dame-West Haven has the unenviable task of facing host Darien in the first round on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
Other local teams with a shot to go far are No. 10 Hand, who has one of the state’s best face-off specialists with Casey Dowd, and No. 13 Guilford.
Somers drew the No. 1 seed in Class S but defending champion and No. 5 seed Weston is the team to beat with Ledyard and Barlow also challengers for the title.
In the girls’ tournament, which goes from a Division I-II format to a Class L-M-S format this season, Hand and Cheshire have a solid opportunity to finally make some state tournament noise.
The Tigers have never made it to a final since the CIAC has sanctioned the tournament in 2004 but they are in a position to turn that around. First, Hand is the No. 2 seed and gets home-field advantage at least through the quarterfinals. Second, Hand gets a great schedule break competing in the lower bracket. Since 2004, No. 1 Wilton, No. 8 New Canaan and No. 13 Darien have won six of the last seven D-I titles. All three of those teams are in the M upper bracket. Hand has a great shot to get to its first final.
Like Hand, Cheshire has never been to a CIAC final but like Hand in M, Cheshire has been put in a position to go far in Class L. The Rams are the No. 2 seed and have home-field advantage at least through the quarterfinals. Like Hand in M, Cheshire is in the lower bracket and three of the toughest teams in L are in the upper bracket – No. 1 Newtown, No. 4 Staples and No. 5 Glastonbury.
In Class S, Haddam-Killingworth, which ended the regular season 15-1 to earn the coveted No. 1 seed, gets a first round bye and then plays host to the Morgan-Immaculate winner in the quarterfinals on June 6. No. 5 Weston and No. 7 Granby are other top challengers in S.

Fairfield Prep has its prom on Friday night and as a result the times for the Southern Connecticut Conference boys' and girls' lacrosse championship games have been moved up an hour.

Originally the games were scheduled for 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. with the boys game starting at 6.
In the boys' semifinals, Cheshire defeated No. 3 Guilford 9-4 and Prep defeated No. 4 Hand 10-9 in OT.

Girls' lacrosse: Nine girls violate CIAC rules

Nine high school girls’ lacrosse players in Connecticut who violated CIAC inseason rules have been reinstated for the post-season play but the teams they play on will have to forfeit games played from May 15-23. None of the teams involved are from the New Haven area. They are Avon, Norwich Free Academy, Ridgefield, Staples, New Fairfield and New Canaan.
The nine girls participated in a tryout on May 15 for the Underclassman Games of the Under Armour All American Lacrosse Classic. According to the CIAC, the participation was in violation of the CIAC Student Eligibility rules pertaining to participation on outside teams during the CIAC defined sport season. After reviewing documentation in an appeal today from the member schools and information from Under Armour representatives, CIAC Executive Board members ruled that the girls would be reinstated for the postseason today. But the teams the girls play on will have to forfeit all games played between May 15-23 and CIAC tournament seedings will be adjusted accordingly.
On Monday, the CIAC was informed by the principals of all six schools of the violations.
“This was strictly a communication issue between the players and the schools,” said CIAC associate executive director Paul Hoey. “Nothing maliscious was done and the girls didn’t know they were violating any rules. All the schools self-reported what happened to the CIAC on Monday.
“After the appeal process it was determined that the nine girls would be reinstated today and that they could play in the post season.”
According to a statement issued by the CIAC, the issue will be presented to the full CIAC Board following the 2011 spring season for discussion.

Baseball: Pane Jr. receives prep school honor

Lou Pane Jr., son of East Haven boys’ hockey coach Lou Pane, was named first team all-league in the Western New England Prep Baseball League.
Lou Pane Jr. plays second base and batted .432 for the Williston School. He was 19-for-44 with 10 walks, drove in 12 runs, had nine doubles and a triple and struck out only once.
According to Lou Pane Sr., his son faced some solid pitching during the season.
“Lou faced Pomfret's top pitcher who is going to Brown University on a scholarship and Suffield Academy's top pitcher who is going to Stetson University on a scholarship,” Pane Sr. said. “He also faced Salisbury's pitcher who is going to Fairfield University on a D-1 scholarship. Against those three pitchers Louie was 6-for-8 with five doubles.”
Lou Pane Jr., who played baseball and hockey at East Haven, will attend the University of Bridgeport in the fall.

Sundays are in play

The CIAC decided this week to allow teams to use this Sunday to finish up the regular season. With league tournaments scheduled to begin Monday - maybe - that is a good thing.

Here is the area schedule so far:

BASEBALL: Shoreline: Morgan at North Branford, 1:30 p.m.
SOFTBALL: SCC interdivision: North Haven at West Haven, 7 p.m.; Shoreline: Morgan at North Branford, 1:30 p.m.; Old Saybrook at Old Lyme, 2 p.m.; Coginchaug at North Branford, 4 p.m.
GIRLS’ TENNIS: Hamden at Sheehan, 2 p.m.

LACROSSE: Kilburn leads T-Birds, balanced scoring for Hamden Hall

A few players were inadvertantly left off the area's top scoring leaders today with Kirsten Kilburn of the North Branford girls' lacrosse team leading the way.
Kilburn has been a scoring machine for the Thunderbirds and has 72 goals and 17 assists. She also scored her 200th career goal on April 21 against Shoreline Conference rival Valley Regional.
When it comes to the Hamden Hall boys' lacrosse team, four players have been leading the way for the Hornets.
Jamie DeNicola leads the team with 42 points (24 goals, 18 assists). Austin Kim follows with 32 points (23 goals, nine assists), Chris Breuler has 29 points (16 goals, 13 assists) and Silas Newman has 19 points (12 goals, seven assists).

Boys' hockey: Lyman Hall appeal denied

On Monday, Lyman Hall boys' hockey coach Tim Belcher was informed by the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference, which regulates schoalistic sports in the state, that the Trojans' appeal to move from Division II to Division III was denied.
That makes it 0-for-3 for Southern Connecticut Conference schools and their appeals to move down a division.
On April 26, Cheshire, East Haven and Lyman Hall all made appeals. Cheshire, which was placed in Division I for next season, requested to remain in Division II and was denied. East Haven requested to be moved from Division I to Division II and was denied and now Lyman Hall's appeal to move to D-III has been denied.
Coaches of all three teams believe they would be much more competitive at the lower divisions with the talent they will be losing to graduation and transfers to prep schools.
