HOCKEY: Baldwin, Xavier get best of North Haven

NORTHFORD — It is often said special teams, defense and goaltending win games. That trifecta proved to be true for the Xavier Falcons Saturday night.

Scoring once on the power play, denying North Haven’s power-play unit seven times and riding the 25 save effort of goaltender Shane Baldwin, the Falcons defeated North Haven 2-1 at the Northford Ice Pavilion.

Xavier improved to 7-4-1, while North Haven fell to 5-7.

FOOTBALL: Alumni association to roast legendary West Haven coach Ed McCarthy

The West Haven Football Alumni Association will host “A Roast of Coach Ed McCarthy” Friday, March 2, at 6:30 p.m. at West Haven IA Club, 85 Chase Lane.

The WHFAA will roast the longtime West Haven football coach which should prove to be an entertaining evening. Tickets are $35 ($30 for members) and includes ziti dinner, beer, wine and soda and can be obtained by calling Tinker Blake at 203-934-3820 or Bert Siclari 203-934-0051.

Any corporate sponsors or table sponsors would be welcomed. Advanced ticket purchases are advised.

HOCKEY: West Haven, Notre Dame-West Haven both win/ Milford enjoying bounce-back year

Both the West Haven and Notre Dame-West Haven hockey teams posted victories on Wednesday. The Westies defeated Milford 9-2 on the strength of three goals by Mike Troiano (click here for the story). The Green Knights, ranked No. 3 in the New Haven Register Top 10 Poll, cruised past ninth-ranked East Haven 5-0 (click here for the story).

Despite the loss to West Haven, Milford (a Division II team) is enjoying a bounce-back year and is closing in on a playoff berth. Click here for a story recapping the first half of Milford's season.

Boys' hockey: Roos discusses stepping down at Notre Dame-Fairfield

A week ago, legendary high school boys’ hockey coach Marty Roos shocked the Connecticut scholastic hockey world by deciding to step down in mid-season as Notre Dame-Fairfield coach. The only comment forthcoming from Roos the past week regarding the move was a brief statement in a press release distributed by the Notre Dame-Fairfield athletic department.
In an exclusive interview with the Register this morning (Tuesday), Roos’ first interview with the media since stepping down, he echoed his sentiments in the press release but went a step further, including his desire to put to rest some rumors.
“It was just my time to move on,” said Roos, 76. “I always told you when the time was right to step away from coaching I would know. It was a decision I had to make, I made the decision and once I made the decision I moved forward and didn’t look back.
“What I want to do now is spend my time with the little people, helping youth players develop and play the game that I love. I read stories where I might come back to coach high school hockey. That is not my plan. My focus right now is on youth hockey.”
Roos spent 41 years coaching boys’ hockey, first with Fairfield Prep and then took over for the Lancers in the 1991-92 season. He owns the record for most wins by a Connecticut high school coach with a 536-301-19 career record (both schools combined). He won six CIAC state titles.
There have been rumors that his decision was due to health or due to problems with Lancers’ players and parents. Roos emphatically denied that was the case.
“Hey, I feel great,” Roos said. “I grew up on a farm and I’m in good health. This decision had absolutely nothing to do with what was going on with the team. I had no problems with parents and I had no problems with players or the school.
“I just felt it was time to move on.”
Roos, who owns the Milford Ice Pavilion and Northford Ice Pavilion in North Branford, said he doesn’t plan to be a recluse and will have a bigger public presence at his rinks.
“I love to skate and that’s something I’ll always do,” Roos said.

High School Hockey: Notre Dame-Fairfield coach Marty Roos steps down

Notre Dame-Fairfield legendary coach Marty Roos has stepped down as the Lancers’ coach.
A press release from Notre Dame-Fairfield athletic director Rob Bleggi confirmed Roos has stepped down effective immediately. Assistant coach Steve Hetherman will be the new coach. Calls to Hetherman’s cell phone were not returned.
Roos has coached for 41 years, first with Fairfield Prep, and he then took over ...for the Lancers in the 1991-92 season. At age 75 he owns the record for most wins by a Connecticut high school coach with a 536-301-19 career record. He has won six state titles.
"I always felt that when it came time to step down from coaching I would know that it was time," Roos said in the Lancers' press release. "Even though Notre Dame is mid-season, I believe that now is the right time."
Notre Dame-Fairfield will face No. 4 Hamden today at the Milford Ice Pavilion at 6 p.m.

Baker named SHA Scholar Athlete of Year

Sacred Heart Academy senior Caitlin Baker has been named the school’s 2011-2012 Scholar Athlete. Recognized for her cumulative grade point average, varsity sport participation, community service as well as her self-discipline and leadership, she will be honored at the 29th Annual Connecticut High School Scholar Athlete Awards Dinner in May.

Baker, a Shelton resident, participates for both the cross country and track teams for the Pacers.

HOCKEY: No. 4 Ridgefield upsets second-ranked Notre Dame-West Haven

WEST HAVEN — The Ridgefield Tigers traveled to West Haven knowing they were playing a team that had just come off a tough loss against Fairfield Prep. The Tigers, ranked No. 4 in the New Haven Register Top 10 poll, were up to the challenge.

Behind the goaltending of Nathan Gliedman and the scoring of John Christensen and John Tregurtha, the Tigers upset No. 2 Notre Dame 2-1 at the Edward L. Bennett Rink Wednesday night.

CT Soccer Hall of Fame

Seven new members will be inducted into the Connecticut Soccer Hall of Fame at the annual induction ceremony on January 28 at the Marriott in Farmington.
The inductees are: Steve Coxon, an ex-All-New England performer at Central Connecticut State University who went on to coach the Farmington girls' soccer team to a pair of state championships; Gary Cronin, a former standout at both Sheehan High and Southern Connecticut State University; Carlos Parra, a two-time Parade All-American and Register All-Area selection at Hamden High; Vanessa Pruzinsky Peterson, a former Register Area MVP from Trumbull who went on to play at Notre Dame; Jack Testani, a Hamden resident who played in the Connecticut Soccer League with the Bridgeport Italians and the Waterbury Zimmitti; Max Zieky, a former All-American at Glastonbury High who went onto become a two-year captain at UConn; and Tony Lepore, a former standout at Farmington High.

The Cheshire boys' hockey team will face SCC foe No. 3 Notre Dame-West Haven at 3 p.m., followed by the Hamden girls' hockey team against SCC foe Guilford at 5 p.m. The No. 2 Hamden boys' hockey team concludes the event with a game against No. 1 Fairfield Prep at 7 p.m.

WEST HAVEN — The West Haven hockey team waited more than an hour for Trinity Catholic to arrive for its game Wednesday night. Turns out the Westies could have waited all night for the Crusaders to get out of traffic.

Scoring twice in the first period and adding two more goals in each of the final two periods, the Westies defeated the Crusaders 6-2 at the Edward L. Bennett Rink for their third straight win to open the season.

North Haven boys' hockey: Bring a toy, get free admission

North Haven first-year coach Tom Roche and junior varsity coach Bill Augur have organized a “Bring a Toy to the Game” event to kick off the teams’ first home game against Brookfield/Bethel/Danbury on Friday at the Northford Ice Pavilion at 2 p.m.
Anyone bringing a toy worth $5 or more to the game will receive free admission. All the toys collected will be delivered to Yale New-Haven Hospital’s Children Hospital following the game by members of the North Haven varsity and junior varsity teams.

Boys' Hockey: Hamden at Amity PPD to Thursday

The Amity boys' hockey team was scheduled to host No. 2 Hamden on Wednesday at the Bennett Rink in West Haven at 8:15 p.m. following the Trinity Catholic at West Haven game scheduled to start at 6.
But a lengthy traffic backup on I-95 north delayed Trinity Catholic's trip from Stamford, forcing a later start to the West Haven game. This would have moved the start of the Amity-Hamden game to after 9 p.m.
As a result, the Amity-Hamden game has been rescheduled for today (Thursday) at Bennett Rink at 5:15 p.m.

BOYS' BASKETBALL: Second-half surge sends North Haven to opening win over Law-Milford

NORTH HAVEN — Opening night at the Fred Kelly Gymnasium in North Haven between the host Indians and Jonathan Law was a tale of two halves.

For 16 minutes both teams tried to shake the cobwebs of the first game of the season and despite North Haven’s 25-21 lead at halftime, it looked like it would be anyone’s game in the second half.

The Indians came out full throttle in the third quarter and cruised to a 59-35 victory on Wednesday night.

BOYS' BASKETBALL: Amity holds on to beat Notre Dame-West Haven in season opener

WEST HAVEN — When the Amity boys’ basketball team traveled to play Notre Dame–West Haven in Wednesday night’s season opener, the key to the game was going to be experience.

The Spartans returned three starters from last year’s team while the Green Knights were young and had some injuries to deal with.

Amity showed just how big experience is, fighting off a late Notre Dame charge and holding on for a 62-56 victory at Notre Dame.

Reed named Gatorade Volleyball Player of Year

Kyley Reed of Rocky Hill is the Gatorade Connecticut Volleyball Player of the Year.
The 6-foot-1 senior outside hitter led the Terriers to an 18-4 record and the Class M state title this past season. Reed recorded 578 kills, 460 digs, 133 service aces and 31 blocks while posting a hitting percentage of .598.
A 2011 American Volleyball Coaches Association Under Armour First Team All-American selection, Reed was the Class M State Tournament MVP and a three-time all-state selection. She concluded her career with 1,517 kills, 1,097 digs and 362 service aces.
Reed has maintained a 3.37 GPA in the classroom and has orally committed to play at Rice University next fall. She has volunteered locally as part of a fundraising campaign to benefit breast cancer research and on behalf of a park beautification project.

Turner scores for U-17 national team

Former Notre Dame-West Haven soccer player Tyler Turner scored two goals over the weekend, including the game-winner against Brazil Sunday, to help the U.S. National Under 17 Mens’ soccer team capture the Nike International Friendly in Lakewood, Fla.
In the championship game against Brazil, Turner broke a 1-1 tie with a goal in the 31st minute.
Turner also scored the US teams’ first goal in a 2-1 win over Turkey on Friday.
In addition to beating Brazil and Turkey, the United States team tied France in the three-game Nike International Friendly.

Turner played his freshman season at Notre Dame before being selected for the US Under 17 National Team. Hackett, Zurita named All-Americans

Hand goalkeeper Tucker Hackett and Bunnell forward Zach Zurita were among three Connecticut soccer players named to the 2011 NSCAA Boys High School All-America Team.
Zurita finished with 43 goals and 14 assists to lead the Bulldogs to their first Class L state championship. Hackett saved 96 percent of the shots he faced this season.
Matt Barry of Wethersfield is the third Connecticut soccer player to be honored. The 77 athletes will be recognized at the annual All-America Luncheon, to be held in the Kansas City Convention Center's Grand Ballroom on Saturday, Jan. 14, in conjunction with the 2012 NSCAA Convention in Kansas City, Mo.

Girls' Swimming: Aston retirement party

There will be a retirement party on Saturday (Nov. 26) for Cheshire girls’ swim coach Ed Aston who has decided to retire after 37 seasons as coach. The event will be held at the Cheshire High cafeteria from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. with snacks and soft drinks provided.

Lacrosse: PreGame Lacrosse Tour at Hamden Hall

The PreGame Lacrosse Tour, an organization that evaluates high school lacrosse talent for college recruitment, will be making a stop at Hamden Hall on Saturday. The organization is run by former lacrosse coaches including former college coach Tony Seaman.
The onsite coordinator is Hamden Hall boys lacrosse coach Anthony Raccio.
The event will run from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and will include a player evaluation session, assessment of a player’s lacrosse IQ, perform training, play games and culminate with a recruiting seminar for parents.
Players have to register before Saturday by filling out an application at PreGamelacrosse.com.
“Hamden Hall was chosen because Tony Seaman knows me and was my coach at C.W. Post,” Raccio said. He also coached at Towson, Johns Hopkins and Pennsylvania. "The event is also run by former college lacrosse coaches Jim Stagnitta.and B.J. O’Hara. Many players leave these exposure tournaments with questions but the PreGame coaches will answer everyone’s questions.
“The day ends with a seminar to help parents and players navigate their way through the recruiting process.”

Football: Cheshire celebrates the debut of its new turf field

CHESHIRE - The Cheshire football team will make its debut on its new turf field on Thursday against Southington at 10 a.m. School and town officials will be on hand for a kickoff ceremony for the turf that will begin at 9:20 a.m. prior to the annual Thanksgiving Day game.
Expected to take part in the celebration are Cheshire Superintendent of Schools Greg Florio, Cheshire High athletic director Steve Trifone, state Representative Mary Fritz, Turf Committee Chairman Bob Behrer and Cheshire Town Councilman Tim Slocum.
The official dedication of the field will take place next year when the construction is completed. Trifone said the new track surrounding the field is about 90percent colete and is expected to be done by Saturday. There is also a brick walkway with names of the project donors listed on each brick that needs to be installed as well.

Carini Bowl, powder puff tickets on sale Tuesday

The Sheehan vs Lyman Hall powder puff and Thanksgiving Day (Carini Bowl) football game tickets will be on sale in the Sheehan gym lobby on Tuesday night from 5-7 p.m.
Tickets bought on Tuesday will be $6 for adults and $4 for students and senior citizens. All tickets sold at the games will be $7.

Hand's Hackett to play in All-American soccer game

Hand boys' soccer goalkeeper Tucker Hackett was the only player from Connecticut selected from 40 nationwide to play in the first annual High School All-American game on Dec. 10 in Birmingham, Ala.
Hackett, a Register All-Area selection last year, will play for the East team. The game is being held the same weekend as the men's NCAA Division I College Cup. The All-American game will be played the day in between the semifinals and the final.

MILFORD — With the possibility of facing South-West Conference rival Joel Barlow on the horizon, the Lauralton Hall volleyball team knew it had to focus on a tough Foran team first in the quarterfinals of the CIAC Class M state tournament.

Knowing the Lions were a scrappy bunch that was not going to go away easily, the Crusaders were put to the test.

Through two games, the Lions gave Lauralton Hall everything it could handle. Then, the Crusaders took over.

Wendy’s High School Heisman Award

Two of Connecticut’s most outstanding high school seniors were honored with distinguished recognition as state winners of the 2011 Wendy’s High School Heisman Award. Jennifer Mears of Rockville in Vernon and Christopher Madaffari of McMahon in Norwalk will now go on to compete for the national award that celebrates their hard work, dedication and exceptional records in athletics, academics and community leadership.

Mears and Madaffari were chosen from 48,000 applicants, surviving rounds that narrowed contenders to one male and one female winner from each school, and then to Connecticut’s respected group of 20 state finalists. The area finalists are listed below:

From the “Hindsight is always 20-20” department, we bring you the 2011 Notre Dame-West Haven football team.

Coming off a 2009 state title and a 2010 season in which they were a fairly disappointing (by their standards) 7-3, it was time to regroup. Star quarterback Sean Goldrich had graduated, as had speedsters Tirrell Young-Williams and Phil Bentley.

While we really didn’t know how tough, we knew the schedule in Division I would be brutal and that Notre Dame – while never expected to be poor by any stretch – might absorb a few losses along the way this season.

SWC soccer finals now Monday

With the CIAC pushing the start of its state tournaments to Thursday, the South-West Conference has decided to move the two soccer finals to Monday at Bunnell. The girls go off at 4:30 p.m., followed by the boys at 7.

No. 2 seed Shelton beat No. 3 Amity 1-0 Thursday night to get a chance to defend its SCC championship on Saturday. Standing in the way is No. 4 seed Cheshire, which advanced past top-seeded Sacred Heart Academy in penalty kicks in the semifinals. game time is 5 p.m. at East Haven High. This is the third matchup between the two Housy rivals with Shelton going 1-0-1.
That will be preceded by the SCC boys final at 3 p.m., pitting No. 2 Fairfield Prep against No. 4 Notre Dame-West Haven, a 1-0 winner over top-seeded Cheshire. Prep beat Guilford 3-0 on Wednesday and went 1-0-1 against ND during the regular season.

CIAC pushes back start of state tournaments

BRANFORD — If the Sheehan volleyball team goes on a run in next week’s state tournament, the Titans can easily point to Wednesday night’s Southern Connecticut Conference tournament quarterfinal victory over Branford as a spark.

The story is not that the Titans defeated Branford 3-1 — it is how the victory came about.

After splitting the first two games and trailing 21-13 in the third game, the Titans were on the verge of going into the fourth game in a must-win situation.

Cross country meets rescheduled, season extended

The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference has rescheduled the remaining three divisional cross country championships and the State Open to Tuesday at Hammonasset State Park in Madison.
Also, teams in boys' and girls' soccer, field hockey and girls' volleyball will have until Saturday, an extra two days, to complete regular-season games to qualify for the state tournament.
The Class SS and S girls and the Class SS boys cross country meets were originally scheduled at Wickham Park but that facility is unavailable due to damage occurring during Saturday's snowstorm. The S girls will begin at noon, followed by the SS boys at 12:35 p.m. and the SS girls at 1:05. The boys State Open race will begin at 1:45 p.m., followed by the girls' race at 2:30.
The state tournament pairings for the other four sports will be released on Sunday.
"In the case of cross country and in soccer, volleyball and field hockey, we believe we have done everything possible to allow schools to complete their regular seasons while still holding fair and competitive tournaments," CIAC associate executive director Paul Hoey said in a statement. "We would hope that member schools whose facilities are available will help others whose facilities may not be so that as many games as possible can be completed by Saturday."

Saturday's snowstorm and subsequent power outages has postponed the remaining three CIAC cross country state meets on Monday and forced some of the Southern Connecticut Conference tournaments to be reshuffled.
The girls Class SS and S and the boys class SS meets at Wickham Park in Manchester have been postponed for a second time. The CIAC has not announced a makeup date and won't do so until Tuesday. Friday's State Open races at Wickham could also be in jeopardy because of the amount of snow the northern portion of the state received.
In the SCC, the girls' soccer quarterfinal matchups, No. 6 West Haven at No. 3 Amity and No. 7 Mercy at No. 2 Shelton, have already been moved from Monday to Tuesday at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m, respectively. The tournament semifinals are now Thursday at the site of the higher seed and the final is now Saturday at East Haven at 12:30 p.m.
The resumption of the SCC boys' soccer quarterfinal between No. 5 Career/Hillhouse and No. 4 Notre Dame-West Haven is still Monday at 3:45 p.m. at Veterans Stadium in West Haven. The game is tied at 1-1 with 29 minutes left. No. 6 Hamden at No. 3 Guilford is also on as scheduled at 3:45 p.m. Monday.
The semifinals have already been moved to Thursday and the final is at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at East Haven.
Monday's girls' volleyball play-in game between No. 10 Amity and No. 7 Mercy is now Tuesday at 3 p.m. in Middletown. The winner plays at No. 2 Guilford on Wednesday at 5 p.m. The other three quarterfinals will still be held Tuesday and the semifinals and finals remain Thursday (site of higher seed) and Saturday (North Haven) as scheduled.
SCC commissioner Al Carbone said the schools can decide to move semifinal-round games to Wednesday if need be, but semis for all sports must be completed by Thursday and the finals will remain on Saturday.

It’s never too early to look at the CIAC playoff race. Well, it can be too early, but as snow covers the ground and we head into November, the time has come to investigate who has a good shot to get in, and who might be in big trouble.

The number of playoff spots that the Southern Connecticut Conference receives on a yearly basis has been a big point of contention since the conference split into its current two-division format (Yeah, there’s officially four divisions, but can you name who is in what division? Didn’t think so. Although apparently Hand can).

NORTH HAVEN — Wednesday night’s girls’ volleyball contest between North Haven and Amity featured two teams coming from completely different directions.

Amity entered having lost seven of its last 11 matches after a quick start to the season while the Indians had won five in a row following a slow start.

The beauty of sports is records can be thrown out the window with the final outcomes decided on the playing surface.

Such was the case at North Haven High where Amity defeated the Indians 3-2 after squandering a 2-0 lead.

WEST HAVEN — With all the momentum shifted to Cheshire’s side and the West Haven defense lacking a big play all night long, Kyle Fields decided to do something about it.

Fields’ hit on Cheshire quarterback Michael John Ecke forced an incomplete pass on the last play of the game to preserve a 46-42 West Haven victory at Ken Strong Stadium Friday night.

Girls' swimming: Spartans hand Rams second loss

For the first time in nearly 30 years the host Amity girls' swim team defeated Cheshire 113.5-72.5 on Thursday and did it in dominating fashion.
The Spartans won 10 of 12 events and improved to 10-0 for the season. Cheshire fell to 8-2.
Reigning Register All-Area girls' swimming MVP Dana Grindall had a pair of win in the 200 individual medley (2:10.23) and 100 butterfly (57.22). Anna Lu also had a pair of wins for the Spartans in the 200 freestyle (1:58.49) and the 500 freestyle (5:18.44) as did Dana Chung in the 50 freestyle (25.93) and the 100 freestyle (55.89).
The Spartans also swept the top three diving spots. Amanda Craig (220.10 points) was first followed by Carly Young (188.90) and Gabrielle Syrop (186.20).
Cheshire's two wins came late in the meet with Sara Barlok winning the 100 backstroke (1:02.58) and Taylor Deubel winning the 100 breaststroke (1:11.32).
The Spartans' final meet of the season is on Tuesday against Shelton at the Shelton Community Pool at 3:30 p.m.

Divisions titles to be decided Saturday

Fairfield Prep is the only boys' soccer team in the Southern Connecticut Conference to have won a division title, clinching the SCC Quinnipiac.
Three are up for grabs Saturday. The Guilford-Hand winner claims the Hammonasset. Game time is 7 p.m. at the Surf Club in Madison.
Shelton could only manage a scoreless tie with Amity Thursday night, failing to clinch the Housatonic. That means Cheshire can earn a share of the title with a win over Shelton at home on Saturday. Shelton can still clinch with a win or tie. Game time is 11:30 a.m.
And if North Haven beats Branford tonight (6:30 in Branford) and East Haven Saturday (5:30 at North Haven), it clinches the SCC Oronoque. If it slips up, there could be a four-way tie for the division with North Haven, Branford, Wilbur Cross and Career/Hillhouse.

In girls' soccer, Sacred Heart Academy has clinched the Quinnipiac, North Haven has won the Oronoque and Guilford has won the Hammonasset.
That leaves the Housatonic and Saturday's big game between Cheshire and Shelton at Shelton at 6 p.m. Cheshire won at Amity Thursday to stay alive in its defense of the title. Saturday's winner is the division champion.

Soccer showdown in Hamden

Sacred Heart Academy could be just hours away from clinching its first SCC Quinnipiac Division title in school history. The Pacers can do so by winning, or tying, Hamden, the defending champion, at home at 3:45 p.m.

North Haven wrapped up the SCC Oronoque last night. Guilord can clinch the SCC Hammonasset outright with a win or tie against Foran tonight. That leaves the SCC Housatonic with Amity, Shelton and Cheshire all still in the hunt.

Swim for Hope meet Tuesday

The Seymour girl’s swim team will host their first annual "Swim for Hope" meet with St. Joseph-Trumbull at 4 p.m. Tuesday. All proceeds will be donated to the Seymour Pink Foundation, which raises funds for breast cancer awareness. Both teams will be wearing special pink swim caps and tatoos. The Seymour swimmers will be also wearing swim shirts that state "Keep the Breast in the Stroke."
Anyone who attends is asked to donate any of the following items the night of the meet to help raise money: water bottles, small gatorade bottles, individual bags of chips, granola bars, snacks or candy.

RAY CURREN'S INSIDE THE SCC FOOTBALL: James Semmonella making key contributions to Amity football team

March 3, 2008 started out, and nearly ended, as any other day in the Amity High School community. The hockey team was preparing for a state tournament game with Enfield, and the basketball squad was getting ready for Windsor.

But after completing a pickup basketball game at the Jewish Community Center on that Monday night, Amity football captain Sal Semmonella, along with friend Francesk Zafi were tragically killed in a one-car accident as they were getting off the Merritt Parkway.

More than three years have gone by and monuments on the Amity campus have been proposed and rejected by the school board, but Semmonella’s jersey is still proudly displayed in the Amity locker room as a reminder of a well-liked kid and another life cut too short.

Cheshire football on the move again

The Cheshire football team will try to snap its two-game losing streak on the road yet again this Friday.
With rain in the forecast over the next few days, Cheshire's home game has been pushed back. The Rams will play Wilbur Cross at Sheehan High Friday at 7 p.m.

Cheshire's next home game is Oct. 28 against Foran.

Hand-Guilford girls' soccer game for breast cancer awareness

Proceeds from the admission to Saturday's Hand-Guilford girls' soccer game at Bittner Park in Guilford will benefit the KicksAgainstBreastCancer and other cancer-related organization(s) chosen by the Susan G. Kohmen for the Cure Foundation. Game time is 7 p.m.
There will be a breast cancer raffle and a collection taken up to help the benefit. The game will be played with pink select “Fight for the Cure” regulation balls. Ballgirls will be wearing special Pink Breast Cancer Awareness penneys and the Guilford players will wear ribbon-adorned shoelaces in support of the cure.

Football: Cheshire hopes to play on turf this week

Officials involved with the turf project at Cheshire High have confirmed a rumor that there is an outside chance the Rams football team could play its first game on the turf this Friday against Wilbur Cross at 7 p.m.
Playing on the turf this week all comes down to Mother Nature. Sheehan High was secured weeks ago to host the Cheshire “home” game with Wilbur Cross if it is necessary.
“Using the turf this Friday is totally weather dependant at this point,” said Bob Behrer, chairman of the Cheshire Turf Committee. “The crew from Georgia (construction company Shaw Sportexe of Kennesaw, Ga.) is installing on schedule but the issue of weather comes at the end game. Sand and rubber infill can not be done in the rain according to their foreman.”
Cheshire High athletic director Steve Trifone echoed Behrer’s remarks and said rain later this week could delay the final phase of installation.
The information on www.weather.com indicates a 70 percent of rain for Wednesday, 30 percent chance for rain in the morning on Thursday and 40 percent chance for rain early during the day on Friday.
Regarding another rumor, Trifone and Behrer shot down the notion that the installation of the new track surrounding the turf field will be delayed until the spring.
“I am not aware of the track installation being delayed until spring,” Trifone said. “The weather should be fine for the track installation this fall. Daytime temperature must be around 42 degrees and late October, early November should cooperate with those temps.”
Behrer said if the area has normal fall weather the track installation will start “the week of Oct. 17 and be finished in 2-3 weeks.
“Again, this phase is dependent on the weather,” Behrer said. “We’re talking temperatures of 42 degrees and rising in the morning with no moisture (rain) because of the bonding and coating that needs to take place.”

Amity-Shelton tilt tonight

A huge game in girls' soccer this evening as Amity travels to Finn Stadium to take on Shelton at 7:30 p.m. The two teams tied earlier this season. The game could go a long way in determining the SCC Housatonic Division champion.

Coaches spend hours and hours trying to analyze and think through game plans, but after his team was beaten fairly soundly last Thursday night by Hand in Meriden, Cheshire coach Mark Ecke pretty much summed up the success of the Tigers’ defense succinctly and simply.

“They ran to the football and tackled well,” Ecke said. “Our kids never had a second chance.”

Boys' lacrosse: Barron, seven others selected for local hall of fame

The Connecticut Chapter of United States Lacrosse, the governing body for lacrosse in the United States, announced that Frank Barron of Branford is one of eight people in Connecticut selected for induction into the Chapter’s Hall of Fame.
They will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at a dinner at the Aqua Turf in Southington on Nov. 13 at 4 p.m.
Barron, the Connecticut liason to U.S. Lacrosse, is a long-time coach at both Hand High and Branford High.
Others selected were Howard Benedict, a former coach at New Canaan; Jeff Brameier, current coach at Darien; Patti Klecha-Porter, a women’s official and coach at Wesleyan University; David Leete, an official, CIAC boys lacrosse tournament director and former AD at Manchester; Culver Modisette, an official and founder of Connecticut Valley Lacrosse in Simsbury; Maureen O’Shea, a former girls coach at Convent of Sacred Heart in Greenwich; and Andy Towers, a New Canaan and Brown alumnus, high school and collegiate All-American and current head coach at Dartmouth.

MILFORD — When cross-town rivals Law and Foran meet in any sporting event, the atmosphere is usually buzzing. Throw in a good cause and a packed house and the event becomes electric.

Such was the case Wednesday night in Milford when the two volleyball teams met on a night dubbed “Dig Pink” in the fight against breast cancer. The intensity was high from the start and never let up as Foran defeated Law 3-1 at Jonathan Law.

WEST HAVEN — Despite completely different records, both the West Haven and Notre Dame boys’ soccer teams expected an intense battle Tuesday afternoon at Veterans Field and both teams delivered.

Ejike Okoro’s goal with 25 minutes, 34 seconds remaining in the second half turned out to be the lone goal of the contest as Notre Dame defeated the Westies 1-0.

Soccer division showdowns part II

First place is on the line tonight in the SCC Housatonic Division tonight as the Shelton boys' team hosts Cheshire. The winner will be the only remaining unbeaten team in the division.
The same two teams battle in girls' action today at 3:45 in Cheshire. If Cheshire, the defending champ, beats Shelton, the reigning league and Class LL state champ, then Amity will be the only unbeaten in the Housy.
In the SCC Oronoque, the Career/Hillhouse-Wilbur Cross boys game has been moved to East Haven High tonight at 6 due to poor field conditions at East Shore Park. Cross is the only unbeaten team in the division.

Then you have the best rivalry in the league - Hand vs. Guilford, part I - at 7 tonight at Guilford High. Hand is the defending division and league champion.

Hopkins' Paige heading to Stanford

Hopkins' tennis player Nolan Paige will continue his stellar career next year at Stanford University.
Paige, 17, orally committed to the Pac-12 school earlier this month over such prestigious schools like North Carolina, Duke, Wake Forest, Ohio State, Harvard, Yale and Michigan, all of whom offered partial scholarships, according to Paige, except for Harvard and Yale, which do not offer scholarships.
Paige said he will sign a national letter of intent in November.
"Coach (John) Whitlinger talked to me a lot, more than any other coach," Paige said. "He wants to try to win a national championship and said I can be a big part of it. And I love the California weather."
Paige said he applied to Stanford in July and found out at the end of August that he had been accepted.
The Register's reigning three-time Area MVP, Paige, a Fairfield resident, won his second consecutive USTA New England Sectional 18-under singles title in June over Dan Hirschberg, the reigning Class LL and State Open champion from the CIAC schools.
Paige finished 12-0 in singles at Hopkins, helping the Hilltoppers win the New England Prep School B championship for the second straight year. He is 35-1 in three years at Hopkins.

Boys' hockey: Roche named new coach at North Haven

North Haven High officials have tabbed one of its own to be the new boys’ hockey coach.
Tom Roche, who played hockey at North Haven and graduated in 1973, has been selected as the new Indians’ coach. He played defense for the Indians the first season (1971-72) they played as a varsity program. He also played for the Quinnipiac men’s hockey team from 1975-77.
“When the opportunity to coach at my alma matter became available, I had to apply,” said Roche, 55, who is a project manager at Yale-New Haven Hospital. “The chance to finally come home is a dream come true.
“Coming to North Haven I have been blessed with four very strong captains, a solid senior class and over 30 underclassmen who want to play. I am not used to having such a large feeder group of players. Because of this we will continue to have a full JV (junior varsity) program.”
Roche has been a coach for almost 40 years at all different levels but said he enjoys the high school age players the most. He is vice president of the Greater New Haven Youth Hockey program and also is the program’s Midget (Under-18) director.
Roche coached Shelton from 2008-2010 and last season (2010-2011) was instrumental in getting the team to co-op with Staples-Weston. The co-op move proved to be successful as the team advanced to the CIAC Division III finals. Shelton-Staples-Weston lost 4-0 to Watertown-Pomperaug in the D-III final.
“I am thrilled to be back at North Haven after 40 years and I plan to finish my coaching career where I started,” said Roche. “The goal for us will always be to get to the post season.”

The Shelton boys won its third game in the SCC Housatonic Division, winning at Amity 2-1. Shelton is looking every bit the preseason favorite so far.
In the Quinnipiac, Fairfield Prep remained unbeaten with a 3-0 win at home over Hamden in a battle for first place. The game was scoreless at halftime. Then Hamden's Matt Sullo picked up a red card in the early stages of the second half and the Green Dragons had to play a man down for the rest of the game. Their defense held for 10 minutes before the Jesuits finally broke through. Prep was the division favorite here and will be tough to beat. Notre Dame-West Haven won at Xavier to stay in the hunt.
Career/Hillhouse still hasn't lost, but could only manage a scoreless tie against Lyman Hall Tuesday. The co-op team will face Branford on Friday.
And a day after beating Guilford, Bunnell lost again at Pomperaug, this time 3-1. It's the second loss of the season for the Bulldogs, who lost to Pomperaug in the SWC tournament final last year.

In girls' soccer, West Haven dealt Sacred Heart Academy its first loss of the season 3-1 at home. West Haven Hamden and SHA now have one Quinnipiac Division loss apiece. Hamden, the defending champion, beat Mercy Tuesday.
Amity won at Cheshire 1-0 as the three-team race, along with reigning champ Shelton, looks to be one that will continue throughout the season.

Football: Completion of turf field at Cheshire delayed

Rainy weather coupled with some cool days we've had the past few weeks have combined to delay the completion of the turf field project at Cheshire High.
Originally scheduled for completion on Oct. 14, the completion date is now termed TBA (to be announced). The Oct. 6 "home" game has already been moved to Falcon Field in Meriden with a 7 p.m. start. The Oct. 14 "home" game with Wilbur Cross on Oct. 14 has now been moved to Sheehan in Wallingford with a 7 p.m. start.
Another wrinkle in the project is the secondary project of resurfacing the track that surrounds the field. R.A.D. Sports company of Rockland, Mass., the construction company handling the project, is doing its best to keep the project moving forward according to Turf Committee chairman Bob Behrer. Behrer said the track resurfacing needs 2-3 weeks of curing before anyone can walk on it.
The hitch is that the curing can't be done unless there is a 7-10 day stretch of warm, dry weather.
"Right now the Oct. 28 home game with Foran (7 p.m. start) is TBA, all depending on the progress of the project," Cheshire High athletic Director Steve Trifone said. "I do not think they want to put the track resurfacing off."
One option is to delay the track resurfacing until next spring. But officials close to the project believe R.A.D. Sports will do everything it can to get the track done this fall.
According to one source, it is more than likely the first home game on the turf field will take place on Thanksgiving Day against Southington at 10 a.m.
However, Behrer said everything will be done to try and get the project done before Thanksgiving.

Bunnell boys soccer beats Guilford

Zach Zurita scored twice, once in each half, to help Bunnell shut out Guilford 2-0 Monday at Bunnell High in Stratford.

Guilford had its chances in the first half, outshooting the Bulldogs over the opening 40 minutes. But once Zurita scored his second goal 11 minutes into the second half, it was all Bunnell after that.

The non-conference matchup between Guilford from the SCC and Bunnell from the SWC is today at 4 p.m. in Stratford. These are two of the better programs in the state.
The two teams won't meet again because Guilford plays in the Class LL division while Bunnell plays in Class L. The two programs have never played against one another before.

Basically, they're encouraging staff and students to use Twitter and Facebook in school, but for educational purposes.

Girls' swimming: Cheshire streak improves to 280

Jessica Liu won the 200 individual medley in 2:19.59 and the 100 butterfly in 1:04.36 to lead the Cheshire girls' swim team to two wins in a tri-meet at the Cheshire Community Pool today (Friday).
Cheshire defeated West Haven 113-65 and defeated Hand 113-68 to improve to 4-0 this season.
The Rams improved their national record dual meet win streak to 280.
