Father and son to coach against one another

By Joe Morelli, Schools Sports Editor
jmorelli@nhregister.com / Twitter: @nhrJoeMorelli
Scott Raffone vividly remembers the last time he coached against his father.

It was the 2006 regular-season finale. Scott was then coaching at East Haven. The Yellowjackets needed a win or tie in order to qualify for the state tournament — against his dad, Rudy, and his former school, Notre Dame-West Haven.

It wasn’t to be. Scott remembers Notre Dame scoring with 1 minute, 12 seconds left in the second overtime period, ending East Haven’s season.

“The bad thing about it is even when you win, you lose, because you want your son to win,” said Rudy, the first and only coach at Notre Dame, where he started in 1989. “He would have enjoyed that win much more than I did. After the first game we played that year (a 7-0 Notre Dame win), Scott joked to my wife, ‘I’m going to have your husband arrested for child abuse.’”

Father and son will renew their rivalry Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Indian River Complex in Clinton. Scott Raffone, 39, now coaches Morgan.

Check out more on the Raffones and a key on-field loss for Notre Dame this season.

Here's some of last week's standouts and games to go see for this week.

The first Team of the Week for the fall is...

By Dan Nowak, Register Staff

dnowak@nhregister.com / Twitter: @NHRDanNowak

CHESHIRE — Opening a new swim season with two straight wins is a challenge. Doing it when your team is displaced from your home pool doesn’t make it any easier. But the Cheshire girls overcame the obstacles.

The Rams’ home pool is the Cheshire Community Pool, which has the quirky feature of using a bubble to cover the open-air facility for fall and winter indoor use. It takes two weeks to install the bubble. The installation began Sept. 8 and the pool was supposed to re-open on Friday. But the rain storm on Tuesday slightly damaged the bubble and now the pool isn’t expected to open until this Wednesday or Thursday.

As a result, since Sept. 8 the Rams have been practicing in split sessions at Cheshire Academy with one group from 2:30-4:30 p.m. and a smaller group from 4:30-6. Also, because Cheshire Academy doesn’t have a diving board, the Rams’ divers have been practicing at Sheehan.

RAY CURREN'S INSIDE THE SCC FOOTBALL: North Haven continues climb as a program that has 'made it'

By Ray Curren
Elm City Sports Columnist

In just his second year in charge of the North Haven football program, way back in 1998, Anthony Sagnella led them to an 8-2 record, sharing the Hammonasset Division crown with Hand. It wasn’t really close to qualifying for the postseason under the old format (North Haven finished eighth in Class M, four teams made it), but it was a sign that North Haven was on the rise.

Not quite.

After winning six games in 1999 — saddled by low numbers and general apathy for football in the town — the Indians did not win more than five in the next eight campaigns, the low point being 2005 when North Haven went 0-10 (playing the same Division II schedule they play now).

Field Hockey: Season debut features local teams in 2011 CIAC finals

CIAC field hockey page - http://bit.ly/U6mNnS

The 2012 scholastic field hockey season kicks off today with defending CIAC Class L champion Cheshire facing SCC rival Guilford tonight at 7 and CIAC Class S runner-up Lauralton Hall at SWC rival Pomperaug at 5:30 p.m.

The big question for the Rams is can they replace All-American and Register All-Area field hockey MVP Maria Blois in goal? Blois is playing at Quinnipiac University this season.
The Rams have two goalies this season - senior Lauren Fountain and junior Maddy Levy. Fountain will start today. Rams coach Eileen Dunham said Levy has a sprained wrist and a MRI on Wednesday will determine when she can play.
On the field the Rams are still strong with forwards Emma Farrel (22 goals, 22 assists last season) and Miranda Garcia, midfielder Michelle Federico and defenders Emily Hague and Linda Bonitz.
The Rams face a senior-laden Guilford team led by high-scoring Riley Smith and goalie Nicole Snow. The Indians also have veteran coach Kitty Palmer.

Lauralton Hall has most of its team back including goalie Caitlin Bennett who had 14 shutouts in 2011. The on-field defense is led by Jessica Napolitano (the coach’s daughter) and Micaela Murphy, midfield is led by Mary Kate Fornshell and Elizabeth Lamonte and the top forwards include Caitlin Nevins, Maureen Connelly and Victoria Stapleton.

Hamden's Ugolik hoping for successful season

By Joe Morelli, Schools Sports Editor

jmorelli@nhregister.com / Twitter: @nhrJoeMorelli

People told Rachel Ugolik she would know that feeling, the feeling most high school athletes know when they find the right college, the right place to continue their athletic career.

“And you are like, ‘What the heck is that feeling?’” Ugolik said. “Then you walk on the campus and you realize, ‘Oh, that’s the feeling and you get it. I didn’t get it at other schools.

The school was Providence, and Ugolik, a senior tri-captain at Hamden High, wasted no time in making a oral commitment last November after an unofficial visit. Almost a year later, the 17 year old hasn’t wavered. She won’t officially sign a national letter of intent until next February.

For now, Ugolik needs to focus her final season for the Green Dragons, a chance to improve upon the school record she already owns, 60 goals, and a chance to reclaim the Southern Connecticut Quinnipiac Division.

Defense a hallmark for Lauralton Hall field hockey program

By Dan Nowak, Register Staff

dnowak@nhregister.com / Twitter: @NHRDanNowak

MILFORD — Lauralton High field hockey coach Theresa Napolitano has a coaching style she has never wavered from and it has certainly produced positive results.

Napolitano, who has coached the sport 16 years overall, always builds her teams from the goalie out, stressing defense followed by improving the transition game and then working on a developing offense.

Napolitano instilled the philosophy in her first coaching stint as the Amity field hockey coach for 10 years starting in 1988. Eventually the Spartans won the CIAC Class M title in 1995.

When Napolitano started the Crusaders’ program in 2007 as a club team, defense once again was the starting point and the Crusaders have seen improvement each season.

Here's more on the Lauralton Hall program and season expectations.

Seymour looking strong in volleyball

SEYMOUR — After losing 6-foot-1 senior Christina Cretella to a season-ending ACL injury last season, Seymour coach Cathy Federowicz knew her juniors had to step up.

It was a little ahead of schedule but, the juniors accepted the challenge and led the team to the Class S semifinals before falling to Northwest Catholic. Cretella has since graduated and the seniors know it is their time now.

“I sat down with them at the beginning (of last season) and told them it’s going to come down to you guys and what you can put together,” said Federowicz, who won New Haven Register All-Area Coach of the Year last season.

Mascolo has large shoes to fill at Cheshire

Dan Nowak's story on the new girls'swim coach:

CHESHIRE — Last season, 37-year Cheshire girls’ swim coach Ed Aston announced early on that he was retiring. He had laid a strong foundation of success on the league, CIAC Class L and M and CIAC State Open levels and the early announcement prepared the underclassmen for a transition.

Replacing a longtime coach where the daily routine and expectations are built-in components doesn’t always equate to a smooth transition. But in April, Cheshire athletic director Steve Trifone was presented with a candidate who could easily provide that smooth transition — Dan Mascolo.

“When I was hired, I felt honored to be part of a special program that has a long history of success,” Mascolo said. “I talked to Ed after I got the position. He was very nice and eager to speak with me about the team. He thought I was a good fit for the job and that meant a lot to me.”

CIAC launches new website

The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference said in a release this morning that the organization has announced the launch of a redesigned website at CIACsports.com. The updated site is designed to serve as a valuable information tool for all CIAC constituents, featuring game schedules, rosters, results and information on both regular season and CIAC tournament competition, along with original content and a portal to relevant stories from sources around the state and across the nation.

The Connecticut Association of Schools is also in the process of creating a new website which will launch later this fall.  The web presence of CAS and CIAC were previously combined under one site, but the depth and breadth of information being shared drove the decision to split into two standalone sites.

In addition the CIAC is now on Facebook at facebook.com/ciacsports, and will expand the use of its @ciacsports Twitter account in an effort to provide timely and useful information to the entire Connecticut high school sports community.

The redesign provides all the functionality of the previous site, including the online eligibility center for school administrators and coaches, schedules, results and rosters for all teams, options to receive schedule changes and score notifications via e-mail and/or text messaging, and a directory of athletic information and contacts from member schools.

Fall season is upon us

The Register has already started its lead-up to the fall sports season. Here is a brief look at Hamden Hall quarterback T.J. Linta:

By David Borges, Register Staff

dborges@nhregister.com / Twitter: @DaveBorges

Joe Linta is a football guy. The Connecticut-based sports agent represents numerous NFL players, including Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco, as well as coaches like Romeo Crennel, Chris Palmer and Bill O’Brien.

He played nose guard at Yale and later coached there, both under the legendary Carm Cozza, his mentor. Now he’s beginning his second season at the helm of the Hamden Hall football team.

He’s also a dad, and it just so happens that his two sons — Nick, a senior, and T.J., a junior — are two of the best players on this year’s Hornets squad.

Here is more on Linta.
Shelton's Nick Aprea takes over the coaching reings at O'Brien Tech.

For more on high school football, please keep up on Mike Pucci's Gridiron Glory blog.

Non-football features will debut later this week. The season opens Sept. 11.

Girls Swimming: Branford eager for season to begin

http://www.casciac.org/gswim.shtml

Branford girls' swim coach Scott Butler is looking forward to this season and with good reason.
Last season the Hornets saw the 200 medey relay, 200 freestyle relay and 50 freestyle school records fall. Butler believes it is possible to see those records fall once again. In addition, he believes the 100 freestyle, 500 freestyle and 100 breaststroke records are within reach this season.
Christine Rasile (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle), her sister Lauren Rasile (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle), Calla Cameron (500 freestyle,200 freestyle), Lily Suhanovsky (breaststroke), Abby Raynor (200 individual medley, 500 freestyle) and Chrissy Beaulac (backstroke) are among the swimmers on the team expected to challenge the aforementioned school records.
"Having been the runners-up to Wilton the past two years (CIAC Class M meet) has given us the opportunity to want the title more and more," Butler said. "We are very excited to field a team of 45 swimmers and divers for this upcoming season. With the returning group of swimmers and the addition of 12 freshmen our path to the top will not be carved out for us. A lot of hard work and comaraderie are going to be essential for us to reach our goals.
"But I will say this. It should be an exciting month of November for us."
