AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL: Orange's Concato outduels North Haven’s Andrewsen in Zone II victory

By Mike Madera

NORTH HAVEN — With the way both Orange’s Mike Concato and North Haven’s Chandler Andrewsen were pitching, runs were going to be at a minimum Wednesday night. Concato and Andrewsen locked in a pitchers’ duel for seven innings, knowing any mistake could be costly.

It turns out those mistakes were made by the North Haven defense.

Four North Haven errors led to a pair of unearned runs as Orange Post 127 defeated North Haven 3-0 in American Legion Zone II action at DeMayo Field in North Haven.

SOFTBALL: Scholar athletes step into the spotlight at annual classic

By Mike Madera

WEST HAVEN — The fifth annual Scholar Athlete Classic softball game took place Saturday night at Biondi Field in West Haven. While there are numerous All-Star games, none are quite like this one run by chairman and game creator Nick Aprea.

The game is intended to honor players not only for their performances on the field, but also for characteristics off the diamond. Saturday’s contest also honored the players for their character, work in the classroom and work in the community.

“This has grown tremendously since the first year,” Aprea said. “We actually had 13 more schools participating this year and five have players in the game.

The buzzword for track and field standout Jake Scinto of Cheshire this season in the high jump was consistency.

Consistently raising the bar and improving his height and consistently winning.

On Saturday at the New Balance National Outdoor Track and Field Championships at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C., Scinto capped his high school season in style in the high jump by jumping 6 feet, 8.75 inches on his first attempt at the height to earn him the victory.

Winning the high jump national championship also made him a first team All-American.

Trio plays in state tennis singles finals

WEST HARTFORD — Jason Seidman could have easily surrendered in Wednesday’s Class LL state singles semifinals to an opponent he had lost to three times already this season.

One game from losing the match, the Amity freshman fought back to beat Cheshire’s Bryan Adams in three sets to move onto the finals. On Thursday, Seidman fell behind in similar fashion to Greenwich top seed Tyler Kratky in the LL final, then came back in the second set to serve for the third set.

But the fifth-seeded Seidman ran out of steam as Kratky ended up winning the match 6-1, 7-5 at Conard. Still, it was a good showing for someone who might find himself in the final a few more times before his career is done.

“It was a good experience. I still have next year and the years after. I have a lot to work on,” said Seidman, 15.

Hand, Westbrook win girls tennis state titles

NEW HAVEN — On Thursday the Hand girls’ tennis team was on the verge of falling short of its Class M state title defense, but rallied to beat Southern Connecticut Conference foe North Haven in the semifinals.

The second-seeded Tigers were back at it again on Friday, one step away from back-to-back crowns. If there was any fatigue from the semifinal match that lasted over 4½ hours, the players did not show it.

Hand cruised past top-seeded East Lyme 7-0 for the Class M championship at Yale. The Tigers beat Avon in last year’s final

CLASS M SOFTBALL: Law's season ends with quarterfinal loss to No. 4 Rocky Hill

By Mike Madera
Elm City Sports Writer

ROCKY HILL — Rocky Hill pitcher Megan Ruonavaara entered Friday afternoon’s quarterfinal match against Jonathan Law with a reputation of throwing the ball by opposing teams. Ruonavaara proved she is more than just a pitcher.

Driving in all three runs with a double in the first and a single in the fifth, Ruonavaara led her team to a 3-2 CIAC Class M quarterfinal victory over Law at Rocky Hill.

Ruonavaara did not fool Law from the pitching circle, allowing seven hits and striking out four, but Law could not get a clutch hit in key situations.
